As the fight for women to have equal rights and opportunities has evolved, so has the presence of plays telling these stories. When I wrote my book, Women Writing Musicals: The Legacy that the History Books Left Out, the first-ever book about female musical theatre writers, I researched many musicals that are in this genre as well.

We're covering the ongoing fight for a state tax credit in Chicago, staff cuts at the Kennedy Center, and leadership changes at both Trinity Rep and Opera Australia. In New York, the debate over the proposed Times Square casino continues. Alongside these challenges, we're also seeing positive steps for the industry's future, including the launch of a new national arts accessibility hub and the date being set for the 2026 Jimmy Awards.

Life's greatest tragedy is the passage of time. It is a lesson we all must learn eventually. Within the proverbial circle of life, there is only a beginning and an end that occurs in the immediacy of our own lifetime. Disney’s The Lion King transposes this message from screen to stage through an international collaboration of talent that supercedes the strength of the 1994 animated film from which it came.

Noted reviewer Leonard Maltin gave STOP MAKING SENSE four out of four stars and called it  one of the best concert films. The staging was ambitious: set pieces float in and out of the frame while screens project random images and words behind the band.

Very few bands have made a mark on the Canadian music scene quite like The Tragically Hip. From their early roots in Kingston, Ontario to winning the hearts of millions across Canada, The Tragically Hip have become more than just a band, but rather a national treasure. 

Michael Uslan's memoir, The Boy Who Loved Batman, captures this journey from a comic book-obsessed boy to the producer who brought a darker, grittier version of Batman to the big screen. Adapted for the stage, The Boy Who Loves Batman makes its world debut at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts from October 1 to November 10.

Comedian and solo performer Adam Strauss continues at The Marsh San Francisco with a revised and extended run of his newest show Something Is Wrong with Adam Strauss. Also, while in the Bay Area, he will perform his renowned show, The Mushroom Cure,inspired by a scientific study showing that hallucinogenic mushrooms may cure obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Roundabout Theatre Company has announced the third season of The Refocus Project, its multi-year project to elevate and restore marginalized plays to the American canon. This year's series of readings will feature Asian American and Pacific Islander playwrights: Prince Gomolvilas, Velina Hasu Houston, Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl, and Anuvab Pal.

Due to popular demand, The Marsh San Francisco has announced the second extension of GRANDMA & ME: An Ode to Single Parents. Dedicated to the memory of Copeland’s grandmother, Lena Mae Arbee, GRANDMA & ME: An Ode to Single Parents has been extended through December 10, 2022.

Since debuting his newest work in March 2022, acclaimed actor/playwright Dan Hoyle has used the stage of The Marsh to shed light on social inequality in America. This summer, Bay Area theatregoers will get another chance to view this riveting look at how male white America has been coming to terms with the current racial reckoning when Hoyle brings Talk To Your People back to The Marsh San Francisco for a limited run from July 30–August 27 (dates/times below).

Music Theatre of Connecticut (MTC), Fairfield County's professional award-winning theatre, announces the return of its summer cabaret series, MTC’s Hot Summer Nights.

 The Marsh San Francisco is offering local theatre lovers a final chance to catch Dan Hoyle’s Talk To Your People, adding three final performances on June 3, 18, & 24 to the show’s run, which is currently scheduled through May 28.

You won't want to miss the Jack Skleinsinger's dynamic final Highlights in Jazz concert for 2022, when today's top jazz players take to the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center stage to celebrate the Return of the Jam Session. The 49th season final is is set for May 12. It features Peter and Will Anderson on saxophones, flutes and clarinets; trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, pianist Ted Rosenthal, drummer Victor Lewis, trumpeter Brian Lynch and guitarist James Chirillo, playing together for the very first time.
