Award winning theater company Vincent Victoria Presents will be mounting for the first time in Houston, during Mother's Day Weekend, two rarely produced plays by Harlem Renaissance playwright, author, and anthropologist, Zora Neale Hurston. The two one act plays, 'Color Struck', and 'Meet the Mamma', were written in the mid 1920's but have seldom been seen onstage and were thought to have been lost until the 1990's.

George C. Wolfe's SPUNK was first staged at New York's Public Theater in 1990. It is based on Zora Neale Hurston's 1937 novel 'Their Eyes Were Watching God'.

Wolfe warned that there was a thin line between Zora and the minstrelsy of Amos and Andy. On Q Performing Arts director Jermaine Nakia Lee fearlessly tramples on that line, giving us the opportunity to appreciate and critically examine Hurston's understated feminism in a richly ambivalent production.

Following the record-breaking attendance of Festival 2013, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival announces the 2014 Festival schedule. Jacob's Pillow is a National Historic Landmark, home to America's longest-running dance festival, and a recipient of the National Medal of Arts. Woodie King Jr's New Federal Theatre kicks off its 44th season with 'The Ed Bullins Project' - two revivals from his 'Twentieth Century Cycle of Plays' - In The Wine Time and The Fabulous Miss Marie. Bullins, winner of the prestigious NY Drama Critics' Circle Award and OBIE Award for The Taking of Miss Janie, has greatly influenced American theatre, especially Black theatre. His work, characterized by disdain for ineffective political rhetoric as a substitute for action, most often examines the lives of Black people in the inner city. In 1968, Clive Barnes, writing in the New York Times called Bullins 'a welcome addition to the ranks of New York playwrights.' Four years later, Barnes added 'Bullins writes the way Charlie Parker played: It is all so easy and effortless. It sounds improvised, and yet it doesn't sound improvised, simply because it is the improvisation of formality.' Today, Bullins is regarded as a seminal force in the American theater.
