This April, FEINSTEIN'S/54 BELOW, Broadway's Supper Club & Private Event Destination, presents some of the brightest stars from Broadway, cabaret, jazz, and beyond.

The Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra offered another of its wildly successful pop up concert series at the Bank of Hawaii headquarters downtown on March 28. Joseph Stepec, Assistant Professor of Music at The University of Hawaii at Manoa, Director of Orchestras, conducted the free concert, which received thunderous applause throughout the event.

Particularly in light of the 2016 documentary I Am Not Your Negro, author and civil rights activist James Baldwin is garnering new attention and appreciation for his astute analyses of race, class, and sexuality in U.S. culture. Our reading group will take up his groundbreaking semi-autobiographical first novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain (1953). Attendees are invited to read this seminal text that brought mid-20th Century African-American literature out of the shadow of Richard Wright while deftly exploring the post-Civil War Great Migration, its southern roots, its religious inflections, and its generational tensions. The suggested edition is the most recent paperback (ISBN 978-0345806543). Traditional New Orleans fare of coffee and beignets at Muriel's Jackson Square with lively discussion to follow led by Festival favorite and Southern literary scholar Gary Richards. Seating is limited to 50 persons; pre-registration is required.

Belly dance's roots in Eastern cultures, North African cultures in particular, is undeniable. Black and Brown dancers fill the scenes of ancient Egyptian wall paintings and of dance history gems such as Dr. Magda Saleh's 1975 documentary “Egypt Dances.” So why is it so hard to find Black and Brown dancers making a name and a living for themselves in the modern belly dance scene?

The tragic events surrounding the rise of the Khmer Rouge regime in mid-70's Cambodia serves as the overarching backdrop that links the past and the (near) present in Lauren Yee's stunning new play CAMBODIAN ROCK BAND---which continues its World Premiere production at Orange County's Tony Award-winning regional theatre South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa through March 25, 2018. Tommy Bolin was born to Barb and Rich Bolin in Sioux City, Iowa, August 3 1951. At age five (!) Rich, took him to see Elvis Presley LIVE and Tommy's path, as it turns out, was set. The very blue collar Bolin family did all they could for Tommy, including buying him his first guitar, the obligatory Sears Silver-tone. His first Sioux City teen band was The Miserlous, followed in 1964 at age 13, by Denny and The Triumphs, which morphed into Patch of Blue. In 1999, they were was inducted in the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. After leaving Patch of Blue, Tommy gigged with The Chateaux, based in Vermillion, South Dakota, where he met their drummer, Bobby Berge. It was at a gig with them there they he met John Tesar, who wrote lyrics for Tommy throughout his career. But Tommy wasn't "fitting in" at school. After being suspended from Central High School for his hair being too long, then cutting it short, and still being suspended, Barb and Rich supported 16 year old Tommy in leaving Sioux City. A one way bus ticket to Denver, Colorado was all he needed to start his new musical career.

In response to popular demand, Soho Rep. In this play, which dauntlessly cracks jokes as it eviscerates, twin sisters Anaia (Alfie Fuller) and Racine (Dame-Jasmine Hughes) undertake a murderous journey from the Dirty South to the California desert, seeking payback for a horrendous act. Is God Is treats both morality and genre as notions to be exploded, drawing on the ancient, the modern, the tragic, the Spaghetti Western, hip-hop and Afropunk in its subversion of theatrical constructs.

How many tenors are enough? Three may once have sufficed, but 10 will be the magic number Feb. 28 and March 1, when The TEN Tenors take the stage in the Virginia G. Piper Theater at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.
