Ok, so here's the deal THE LAST FIVE YEARS is one of my favorite shows of all time, and I kid you not this production at Le Petit is way more than I ever expected it to be! Truly. It's very difficult to love an original cast recording with all your heart, and then to go see a regional production of that same show without being disappointed. However, under the brilliant direction of Michael E. McKelvey, Meredith Owens (Cathy) and Adair Watkins (Jamie) completely won me over! (more...)

Tennessee Williams Literary Festival Announces Today's Events

Particularly in light of the 2016 documentary I Am Not Your Negro, author and civil rights activist James Baldwin is garnering new attention and appreciation for his astute analyses of race, class, and sexuality in U.S. culture. Our reading group will take up his groundbreaking semi-autobiographical first novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain (1953). Attendees are invited to read this seminal text that brought mid-20th Century African-American literature out of the shadow of Richard Wright while deftly exploring the post-Civil War Great Migration, its southern roots, its religious inflections, and its generational tensions. The suggested edition is the most recent paperback (ISBN 978-0345806543). Traditional New Orleans fare of coffee and beignets at Muriel's Jackson Square with lively discussion to follow led by Festival favorite and Southern literary scholar Gary Richards. Seating is limited to 50 persons; pre-registration is required. (more...)

The play combines texts from William Shakespeare's Henry VI Part 3 and Richard III, to create a version, which has never been seen before. The production stars Pendleton as Henry VI and Matt de Rogatis as Richard III, while giving a fascinating take on one of history's most notorious villains. God decides to set the record straight and tell us what he really thinks about the 10 commandments, and gives us a few... we'll call them "edits." Apparently, us humans have distorted what God actually meant when he originally wrote his top 10, and he feels the need at this time in history to explain to clear some things up and tell us what he really expects of us. The Tennessee Williams Theatre Company of New Orleans returns to the Marigny Opera House for a second year with Vieux Carre by Tennessee Williams. The play follows a young writer like Williams himself in the spring of 1939 when he first falls in love with New Orleans while staying in a rooming house shared with a cast of eclectic quarter characters. 722 Toulouse Street is the house in question, one of Williams' first homes in the French Quarter. This kicks of a season of New Orleans plays for the company to celebrate the city's 300th anniversary. (more...)
