While August is quickly winding down, much of the country is still engulfed in an oppressive summer heat. Whether or not it's global warming (it's global warming), there is no escaping the Dog Days of Summer. So, for our monthly feature, Jeff Walker and I made the only tangentially related leap to take a look at our favorite showtunes about animals, dogs or otherwise. Take a look at what we came up with, and share yours in the comments below.

So, this month, I am taking over sole duties that I normally share with Jeff Walker, and composing a list of 10 showtunes all about births and birthdays.

The Lusty Month of May; like the song says: 'It's time to do a wicked thing or two!' It's May, the time when spring brings that hot-blooded, four letter word: lust. Musicals have had a steady history of lusty musical numbers. There are songs about rolling in the hay, and others extolling the virtues of different (ahem) flavors of man-candy. Some songs are paens to hot, steamy nights, and some are about what you do on those kind of nights. 

"April showers may come your way, they bring flowers that bloom in May!" So go the words of the old Tin Pan Alley song. When the days begin to get longer, and the daffodils work to pop up through the dirt, we know that spring is just around the corner. April is that gateway to birds singing, grass growing, and romance blooming. This month we look at spring and the season's sweet rains that give life to young love.

'If music be the food of love, play on.' Even before the invention of the musical comedy (more on that later), William Shakespeare knew the importance of music in telling stories on stage. For our March feature, my colleague Jeff Walker and I thought that instead of marking the Ides of March with songs about murder, betrayal, and fate, we would focus on the synergy between showtunes and Shakespeare.

Carol Wincenc's 25th Anniversary Recital at The Juilliard School, taking place tonight, September 30, 2013, at 8:00 PM at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater, features Debussy's Sonata for flute, viola, and harp, L. 137; the world premiere of Yuko Uebayashi's Misericordia for flute and string quartet, a work written for Wincenc; the U.S. premiere of Schnittke's Moz-Art a la Mozart for eight flutes and harp; the New York premiere of Henze's I Sentimenti di Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach for solo flute, solo harp, double string quartet, and bass; and an arrangement by Daniel Paget: One Hundred Roses: Seven Neapolitan Serenades and Dances for flute, strings, mandolin, guitar, and percussion.

Carol Wincenc, the Grammy-nominated artist who is one of the most acclaimed and respected flutists performing today, marks her 25th anniversary as a member of the faculty of The Juilliard School in the 2013-14 season. She is celebrating the milestone with a concert at Juilliard that represents her most cherished facets of artistic life: new music, with the world premiere of a work written for her, and the U.S. and New York premieres of works by Alfred Schnittke and Hans Werner Henze; collaboration with her esteemed colleagues, with every work on the program requiring at least two guest artists; and, of course, teaching some of the best young flutists in the world who pass through Juilliard, with seven of her Juilliard students joining her on the program.

2013 is a landmark year for Seattle-based guitar virtuoso Andre Feriante; it's the 20th anniversary of Andre's beloved Valentines concert (15 years at Benaroya Hall). And for the first time in years, the concert will actually fall on Valentines Day! From 1994 to 1998 Andre moved from SAM to The Frye, to the Broadway Performance Hall for his Valentines Day concert; then in 1999, a few months after Benaroya Hall opened, Andre settled in at the Nordstrom Recital Hall. Benaroya Hall has been his Valentines Day concert home ever since. February 14, 2013 also marks the release of his new CD, Beatles Masquerade ($15), and features his classical and Spanish style guitar improvisations with Beatles motifs woven throughout.
