This week I saw productions of two decades-old musicals, each written by one of theatre's great composer/lyricists, which, in their original productions, ran a combined total of nine performances on Broadway.

If Anyone Can Whistle must be a concert, please, let it be a concert like this. MasterVoices, an organization dedicated to elevating choral works, brought the show to Carnegie Hall for a one-night engagement. They masterfully adapted the show as a scaled-down concert version, dropping any bells and whistles.

This May 3, stars of the West End will gather to salute the legacy of the legendary Stephen Sondheim at a gala performance titled, Old Friends.

Last night's episode of Jeopardy featured a category called 'Remembering Stephen Sondheim', featuring clues about some of the legendary composer's most notable work.

Urban Stages Theater is presenting the premier reading of On The Flip Side, a new jukebox musical by Gary Apple as part of their 'Winter Readings Series.' Jukebox musicals about legendary superstars have packed Broadway houses over recent years, so Apple decided to create one for artists who will never have a jukebox musical of their own -- namely, One-Hit Wonders.

Broadway in Omaha's resident matchmaker found the perfect fit for Omaha audiences in the current hit Broadway tour of 'Fiddler on the Roof.' Featuring music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and a book by Joseph Stein, 'Fiddler on the Roof' is based on a series of short stories written by Sohlem Aleichem and follows family man Tevye as he navigates his three eldest daughter's search for true love in a time when matchmakers arranged the marriages and marrying for love was unheard of. This story of love, loss, and the most beautiful of traditions has found wild success not only on stage but on the big screen. It first opened on Broadway in 1964 and swept the Tonys with nine awards including one for best musical. It was followed shortly thereafter by a movie adaptation in 1971, which received eight Academy Award nominations. It's a family favorite for many, and it's become a musical standard for most of those in the musical theatre community.

The production features Emanuelle Araujo, in the role of sarcastic Velma Kelly; Paulo Szot, as  the charming and unscrupulous Billy Flynn (a role he currently played on Broadway); and Carol Costa as the “innocent” and surprising Roxie Hart. L. Candido (Mary Sunshine), Lilian Valeska (Mama Morton) and Eduardo Amir (Amos Hart) complete the main cast.

The Classics Theatre Project, under the artistic direction of Joey Folsom, has curated a 2022 season of four dynamic productions fitting the company's mission to bring the classics to audiences in accessible and relevant ways.

In just under a week, The Music Man officially opens at the Winter Garden Theatre. Created in a time dominated by the works of musical theatre luminaries like Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Lowe and Leonard Bernstein, the musical is considered one of the greatest works of Broadway's Golden Age, though it was written by a lesser-known genius.

MasterVoices will continue its 2021-22 season celebrating its 80th anniversary on Thursday, March 10 at Carnegie Hall with a concert staging of the cult-favorite musical, Anyone Can Whistle by Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents.

FIDDLER, which runs Dec. 14-19 at the Palace Theatre (34 West Broad Street in downtown Columbus), has everything a good musical should have: a solid plot that sticks with the viewer for months and months, excellent acting and singing, and catchy songs that leave indelible mark in the brain. Its ending, however, is also soul wrenching.

Porchlight Music Theatre has announced Chicago Sings Stephen Sondheim, its annual fundraising concert,  Monday, May 23, 2022 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E. Chicago Ave.
