The San Francisco-based Kronos Quartet/Kronos Performing Arts Association(KPAA) is pleased to present Kronos Festival 2019, Kronos' fifth annual, three-day music festival, at SFJAZZ Center on May 30-June 1. Kronos Festival 2019 will highlight the voices of singers, storytellers, and activists over three evening concerts, a Saturday morning family concert and Kronos Labs, free public events that are new this year. Kronos has long collaborated with vocal artists, including in its recent Grammy Award-winning album Landfall (Nonesuch Records) with Laurie Anderson and its new album Placeless (Kirkelig Kulturverksted) with Iranian singers Mahsa and Marjan Vahdat.

In its Centennial year, the Los Angeles Philharmonic continues to grow in its commitment to supporting the creation of new music and nurturing young composers through two programs: National Composers Intensive (NCI), for composers ages 18 to 30, and the Nancy and Barry Sanders Composer Fellowship Program (CFP) for high school-aged composers. For the first time, the NCI program collaborates with New York City-based International Contemporary Ensemble (the Ensemble) to work with seven composers who will have the opportunity to workshop their pieces, both in New York and in Los Angeles, culminating in a performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

This March, Main Street Theater (MST) will be out in the community to help encourage a love of reading as part of the NEA's Read Across America initiative. READ (Read Across America Day), as it is affectionately known, is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. Main Street Theater is volunteering its services, sending their own Cat in the Hat to 3 schools across the Greater Houston Area to read "his" book and interact with the students on March 1 (since March 2 itself is a Saturday). Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit's Main Stage Actors tackle the weighty topic of social intolerance in The Laramie Project, a production examining the events leading up to and the aftermath of a young gay man's 1998 murder in Laramie, Wyoming. The show is produced and performed exclusively by members of Mosaic's all-youth theatre and runs at the Mosaic Black Box Theatre from Feb. 22 - 24.

From February 28 to March 17, Theater for the New City will present comedian/actor/broadcaster Donald E. Lacy Jr. in the New York debut of his one man show, 'ColorStruck.' The play was born in California's Bay Area and has been presented on college campuses around the country and at the National Black Theatre Festival. It was performed twice for the U.S. Congressional Black Caucus.

The Castillo Theatre (Dan Friedman, artistic director; John Rankin, associate managing director) is proud to announce that it will produce a revival of the 1991 play by Fred Newman, Billie, Malcolm & Yusuf, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Yusuf Hawkins' murder in 1989. Billie, Malcolm & Yusuf will be directed by award-winning director, Gabrielle Kurlander. The production includes blues and rap music. Pinch 'N Ouch Theatre opens its 10-year anniversary season with the Tony Award-winning rock musical, HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, written by John Cameron Mitchell and music by Stephen Trask. Pinch 'N Ouch Theatre's Producing Artistic Director, Grant McGowen will direct Atlanta native Chad Darnell in the role of 'Hedwig,' an East German genderqueer "internationally ignored song stylist." McGowen most recently directed THIS IS OUR YOUTH, FOOL FOR LOVE and WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF at Pinch 'N' Ouch Theatre. "This show is a beast of a show and I'm so excited to bring her to back to Atlanta," said Darnell who previously played the role at the Bay Street Theatre in Savannah, GA in January 2018.
