The Tony-nominated director Eleanor Reissa is set to helm New Yiddish Rep's contemporary staging of Sholem Asch's notorious drama 'God of Vengeance' at La MaMa this winter. The Yiddish language production's Off-Broadway opening is on Christmas Day, Sunday December 25 at 7:30pm with previews beginning Thursday December 22.  It will run for five weeks and 33 performances through Sunday January 22.

San Francisco Opera's 2016-17 Season opens Friday, September 9 with a gala performance of Umberto Giordano's Andrea Chenier in a new production by Sir David McVicar. Company Music Director Nicola Luisotti leads a stellar cast, including three international stars making their San Francisco Opera debuts in the demanding lead roles: South Korean tenor Yonghoon Lee in the title role, Italian soprano Anna Pirozzi as Maddalena di Coigny and Georgian baritone George Gagnidze as Carlo Gerard. The Off Broadway company, Always Love Lucy Theatre, has announced that it will present a bold new staging of George Bernard Shaw's PYGMALION, a classic tale of transformation, that will in this production spotlight the issue of Transgender identity - at a time when voices in support of trans rights are increasingly heard across the nation and the globe. The production will run 5 performances only, May 4 - May 8 at Theatre 54@ Shetler Studios, 244 West 54th Street, 12th Floor.

You cannot beat the Old Globe Theatre for its audacity in mounting the challenging musical Rain, based on a short story by W. Somerset Maugham. Rain was made into three separate films, a silent in 1928 starring Gloria Swanson, and then in 1932 starring Joan Crawford as Miss Sadie Thompson, and finally in 1953 Rita Hayworth assumed the role of the prostitute stranded on the South Pacific Island of Pago, Pago in 1924. This much anticipated musical version with book by Sybille Pearson and music by Michael John LaChiusa is the second time Rain has been performed onstage, the first being a play in 1922. For the entire cast and creative team in San Diego this enterprise has been enormous. It is truly an outstanding ensemble headed by Eden Espinosa as Sadie, and the set designed by Mark Wendland is by itself worth the price of admission.

San Francisco Opera today announced plans to return to KQED 9 for the sixth season of spectacular opera and musical theater works featuring a roster of internationally renowned singers, conductors, directors and designers, all recorded live in high-definition from the War Memorial Opera House.
