BWW Recap: Violent Delights Have Violent Ends in WESTWORLD
by Jessica Naftaly - Oct 2, 2016

“Every hero has a choice.” That's not exactly the tagline of HBO's new drama Westworld, but it should be. Westworld explores mankind at it's core and what our choices say about us. It explores the depths and depravity of humanity, our culture, and our pleasures. What do our choices and our desires say? What is entertainment and why is it so often riddled with sex, violence, and most frequently sexual violence? While we constantly hide behind the separation between fiction and reality, the perverted, exploitative, and gratuitous demand for inclusion of what we generally condemn as morally wrong in our society to be present and pronounced in our media is undoubtable and HBO as a network is frequently one of our biggest culprits. But, perhaps that is why Westworld works so brilliantly. (more...)

BWW Review: MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET Celebrates 'The Devil's Music'
by Carla Maria Verdino-Sllwold - Oct 10, 2016

Ogunquit Playhouse's revival this season of last year's popular success, MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET, continues to add luster to this thoroughly enjoyable juke box musical about the historic meeting at Sun Records of four of rock n' roll legends, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and Jerry Lee Lewis. The show using music by these icons of pop music with a book by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux ensnares its audience in what the Jerry Lee Lewis character aptly terms the "devil's music" - capturing the full revolutionary force of early Rock and the originality of these musicians. BWW Review: THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS was Sinfully Entertaining at Seymour Centre
by Brodie Paparella - Nov 25, 2016

An affirming welcome surprise of a production, boutique and nuanced in its delivery, thoroughly charming in its concept, The Screwtape Letters is a must, especially for all lovers of clown and commedia. Director Hailey McQueen and her team have crafted here a transformation of what could be a lacklustre, perhaps even puerile submission to Sydney's scene into a genuinely entertaining and insightful show with much fortitude in its use of technique and tradition. Polished and precise, The Screwtape Letters is unlike anything Sydney has had to offer this past year. (more...)

Whitney Biennial 2017: Best Performance Artist 'Seb-The Younger' By Barry Kostrinsky
by Barry Kostrinsky - May 24, 2017

There is so much wrong with the Whitney Biennial I hardly know where to start. The every two year show of American artists is anything but that. I asked someone if the last biennial was two or three years ago and they quipped back it is a biennial, it was two years ago. Actually it was three years ago. The museum truthfully tells they were not ready for the show in the new building and gave themselves an extra year. lyingly they say it took the curators a long time to visit all the studios across the country. The exhibit is suppose to be of American artists. What is an American artist these days? Indeed a good 30% don't live nor work in the US. I don't find much use for national cheering in exhibitions but if you claim to be American have only American cheese, no matter how inferior it is to Gruyere. And what is the title of the exhibit? There is none. Indeed such a disperse group of artists makes a title hard to stick to many of the members, maybe a good title would  be,' Politically, Financially and Socially correct enough to make it here'. BWW Review: THE DEVIL'S MUSIC: THE LIFE AND BLUES OF BESSIE SMITH at Rubicon Theatre Company
by Cary Ginell - Feb 24, 2017

It's been 80 years since Bessie Smith, the celebrated Empress of the Blues, died a lonely death, after an auto accident on a desolate Mississippi road. Contrary to legend, Smith did not bleed to death after being refused admission to a white Southern hospital. That story was related to Down Beat magazine by Columbia Records impresario John Hammond, who later apologized, saying that it was all based on hearsay. But her injuries were severe enough so that when she was taken to the nearest hospital (which happened to be one that accepted blacks), that she was beyond saving, and died at the young age of 43.
