The company of Barrow Street Theater's immersive mounting of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd celebrated one year of baking up scares this week. The newest cast members Thom Sesma, Sally Ann Triplett, Zachary Noah Piser, Billy Harrigan Tighe, DeLaney Westfall were in attendance to send Sweeney into its next year of murder, mayhem, and meat pies! Stephen Sondheim, who wrote the music and lyrics for 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,' which is now in production at Blank Canvas, is noted as a brilliant lyricist. Interestingly, that is not the way he sees himself. He is well-trained as a musical composer, having, from a young age, been the prodigy of Oscar Hammerstein II. Yes, the composer of such mega hits as 'Oklahoma,' 'South Pacific' and 'Sound of Music.'

The evening's entertainment was directed by Kurt Stammc(York's Closer Than Ever; Our Sinatra), with music direction by Andrew Gerle (York's Closer Than Ever).

Mit acht Tonys wurde die Urauffuhrung von SWEENY TODD am Broadway 1979 ausgezeichnet. Sondheim legt hier eine grotesk pervertierte Opernhandlung vor, die einen Barbier, ein Mundel, bose Heiratsabsichten und grausige Vergeltungen in den Mittelpunkt stellt: Sweeney will erlittenes Unrecht rachen und mutiert dabei selbst zum Bosewicht a la Michael Kohlhaas. Zum 85. Geburtstag des Komponisten blickt das Theater Freiburg wieder auf diesen Klassiker, der dort vor 30 Jahren seine deutsche Erstauffuhrung erfahren hat.
