The Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra offered another of its wildly successful pop up concert series at the Bank of Hawaii headquarters downtown on March 28. Joseph Stepec, Assistant Professor of Music at The University of Hawaii at Manoa, Director of Orchestras, conducted the free concert, which received thunderous applause throughout the event.

Written in 1911, this early feminist's battle of the sexes drama focuses on He (Tom Herford) and She (Ann Herford), husband and wife artists whose marriage is put to the test when it is time to submit for a prestigious commission. He and She is often considered Rachel Crothers' most important play for its nuanced depiction of the choices faced by the New Woman of 1911. He and She opened in Boston in February of 1912, had a successful run on Broadway in 1920, and had a major revival in 1980 when mounted by New York's BAM Theatre Company.

Inspired by the real-life story of Ruth Snyder, Helen is the lens through which the mechanics of America are seen. The award-winning Equity professional East Lynne Theater Company's production of Eugene O'Neill' 'Ah, Wilderness!' continues to delight audiences. This large-cast comedy from 1933 originally starred George M. Cohan in the role of Nat Miller, and Will Rogers played the role on the road the following year.  Nat is the editor of a newspaper in a Connecticut town in 1906, with a devoted wife and several children going through different phases of 'growing pains.' Mark Lazar, who was in ELTC's 'Zorro!,' is portraying this iconic role.  

When Rodgers & Hammerstein's OKLAHOMA! premiered on Broadway in 1943, audiences were introduced to a style of theatre that would soon become a staple of American pop culture - the book musical. The show, borrowing from its pioneer subject matter, itself became a pioneer in the theatrical world, redefining what audiences would come to expect from a Broadway production. It is a wonder, then, that it would take 74 years for Goodspeed Musicals to mount its first production, ever, of this groundbreaking show. And judging by the quality of the show taking the stage each night at the Goodspeed (the second show in its current season), it was definitely worth the wait.
