Seattle Opera to Address Imperialism and More with Community Events for MADAME BUTTERFLY
by BWW News Desk - Jun 9, 2017

With stylized sets inspired by Japanese theater and lush, colorful kimono worn by singers, Seattle Opera's grand production of Madame Butterfly coming this August may seem like business-as-usual. But there's a dramatic difference that sets this Butterfly apart: the broader conversation taking place on cultural appropriation, yellowface, and Asian American representation. While certainly not new to many Asian and Pacific Islanders, these conversations have permeated the Puget Sound theater scene for the past several years following a production of The Mikado that made national news. 1984 Comes Brings Big Brother to Reckless Theatre
by BWW News Desk - Jul 7, 2017

Viewed through the eye of the Party, this take on Orwell's frighteningly relevant novel leaves behind the narrative of Winston and Julia, instead exploring the world, themes, and peripheral characters. It asks the audience to question their own relationship to truth, indoctrination, sex, community, and torture. War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength, Tragedy is Comedy. Fridays and Saturdays July 28th-August 5th, the cast performs 1984. They will perform 2 shows on Friday, July 28th; Saturday, July 29th; and Friday, August 4th at 7:30 and 9:30pm, with the closing performance on Saturday August 5th at 7:30pm. Directed by Tom Kelley and Anne Veal, 1984's cast is pulled from the company and student body of Reckless Theatre, founded and directed by Christian Capozzoli, ranked one of the top five improv comedy clubs in NYC by TimeOut New York. BWW Review: HIGH SOCIETY at SBCC Theatre Group
by Maggie Yates - Jul 21, 2017

While concepts in High Society may have been viewed as 'kitschy' when the play premiered two decades ago, in the age of Instagram stars and The Real Housewives, these characters, who are charming in their relative innocence as compared to the shameless celebrities of the information age (even our president is a faux-lebrity real estate mogul-turned-reality show host), seem tame. High Society is a pleasant enough way to spend an evening, but it doesn't really go anywhere. There are no risks, no extraordinary thrills: just a very safe presentation of feel-good music from a bygone era. (more...)

BWW Review: CABARET at Serenbe Playhouse
by Amy Zipperer - Aug 4, 2017

It's hot out at Serenbe Playhouse this month.  But the heat isn't coming from the oppressive Georgia-in-August sun.  It's coming from the racy and enthralling production of Kander and Ebb's Cabaret on display at the Kit Kat Club, a neon-framed outdoor cabaret club, complete with cabaret tables flanking a long runway stage, very scantily clad cocktail waitresses, and an elevated first-rate orchestra.  This impressive site-specific setting dazzlingly supports a talented cast, and celebrated visionary director Brian Clowdus, who takes on the role of The Emcee in this production, powerfully showcases the unsettling relevance of the beloved 1966 musical.
