Ira Glass, public radio host and creator and producer of This American Life, returns to the Valley on Jan. 20, 2018, to share lessons from his life and career in storytelling in Seven Things I've Learned: An Evening With Ira Glass. His appearance at the Orpheum Theatre in Downtown Phoenix is part of Scottsdale Arts' new Scottsdale Arts Presents series. During his presentation, Glass will use audio clips, music and video to mix stories live onstage and help his audience better follow the creative process of one of our nation's foremost storytellers. The anniversary of both Esther Rolle's birth and death are in November, and to celebrate the achievements of this amazing woman, who is also buried in Pompano Beach, The Rock Road Restoration Historical Group will present a special exhibit at The Historic Ali Cultural Arts Center (www.aliarts.org), which will run from November 1 through December 2, 2017.

Jazz is about 100 years old, and Latin jazz is 80. But Latin jazz also has another name: Eddie Palmieri. Palmieri, one of jazz's legendary pianists and band leaders, will appear in concert with his Latin Jazz Orchestra Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, as part of a tour commemorating his 80th birthday.

San Francisco Opera presents Verdi's La Traviata in ten performances at the War Memorial Opera House, September 23 through October 17. Company Music DirectorNicola Luisotti leads an international cast featuring three artists making their Company debuts in leading roles: Romanian soprano Aurelia Florian as Violetta Valery, Brazilian tenor Atalla Ayan as Alfredo Germontand Polish baritone Artur Ruci?ski as Giorgio Germont. The classic 1987 San Francisco Opera production, which evokes the opulence of mid-19th century Paris in lavish, detailed settings and costumes, will be revived by original director John Copley along with stage director Shawna Lucey. Artistic Director of Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco Carola Zertuche contributes new choreography in her Company debut. Ian Robertson directs the San Francisco Opera Chorus.
