Ladysmith Black Mambazo fuses the intricate rhythms and harmonies of its native South African musical traditions with the sounds and sentiments of gospel. The all-male vocal group rocketed to fame in the mid-1980s when Paul Simon incorporated its rich harmonies into his groundbreaking album Graceland, which helped introduce world music to mainstream audiences. Ladysmith Black Mambazo has since earned multiple Grammy Awards and recorded with artists around the world.

Hailed as "one of the finest American klezmer bands" (Songlines), Metropolitan Klezmer performs an exhilarating range of musical treasures with agility and depth. Formed in 1994 by drummer/leader Eve Sicular, this collaborative adventure of eight exceptional New York musicians combines the best of downtown, classical and world music scenes to create inspired, neo-traditional interpretations and compositions around a panoply of eclectic Yiddish repertoire: ethereal trance, rollicking dance, imaginatively arranged Yiddish swing and tango, plus genre-expanding originals such as klezmer cumbia.

This second program in this season's series of Close Encounters With Music brings together sublime chamber music, distinguished performers and insightful commentary. Artistic Director and cellist Yehuda Hanani introduces each program from the stage, placing the composers' works and their times in perspective. All of Paris was in love with the alluring Augusta Holmès, a student at the Conservatoire, and later a pivotal figure in that city's artistic circles in the late 19th century. The tie that binds together the brilliantly virtuosic Saint-Saëns Violin Sonata No. 1 and the smoldering Franck Piano Quintet is the composers' shared unrequited adoration of Holmès.

Steven Page's distinctive and powerful tenor is among the most immediately familiar voices in popular music today. A founder of the iconic rock band Barenaked Ladies, the singer-songwriter joins Toronto's Art of Time Ensemble in an evening of seminal songs by Randy Newman, Radiohead, Elvis Costello, Barenaked Ladies, Leonard Cohen, Page himself and others. These gems are reimagined and reinvented by some of the greatest minds in classical, pop and jazz, and delivered by a defining voice in contemporary rock.

Affectionately known as "The Pope of Trash," John Waters is celebrated for his now-classic cult movies such as Pink Flamingos, Polyester and Hairspray. He is also a photographer and curator whose work has been shown in galleries and museums around the world, and the author of numerous books, including the best-selling Role Models; Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America; and most recently, Make Trouble. Just in time for Valentine's Day, he returns to Scottsdale for a night of adults-only commentary, followed by a book signing.

Founded in 1971 by Artistic Director Brenda Way and now based in San Francisco, ODC/Dance was one of the first American companies to incorporate a post-modern sensibility (an appreciation for pedestrian movement) into a virtuosic contemporary dance technique and to commit major resources to interdisciplinary collaboration and musical commissions for the repertory. The company has been widely recognized for its rigorous technique and numerous groundbreaking collaborations with composers, singer-songwriters, actors and artists.
