Mr. President Broadway

For his final Broadway score, Irving Berlin went straight to the top-the exalted office of President of the United States-to evoke the humanity within the First Family. President Stephen Decatur Henderson is en route to Russia when the proposed Soviet tour is canceled. Although a breach of protocol, he determines to land in Moscow nonetheless and the resulting humiliation costs him re-election. While his wife and two children are grateful to return home, the former President is not. He yearns to return to political life but when the offer of a Senate seat comes with compromising conditions attached, he turns it down. His love of country is primary though, and eventually he proudly returns to government at the behest of the new president.

Music and Lyrics by Irving Berlin; Book by Howard Lindsay & Russel Crouse

Michael Colby and Paul Katz, the creative team behind Tales of Tinseltown, have another Hollywood musical in the offing. On Saturday, November 2nd at 7 pm, The Green Room 42 presents Slay It With Music In Concert a?" to benefit International Rescue Committee. The original musical, acclaimed in both London and off-Broadway, is an ode to Grande Dame Guignol, the genre of 1960s horror movies in which stars like Bette Davis and Joan Crawford made screen comebacks, in the tradition of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, Sunset Boulevard, and Psycho. It's a sharp way to cap off Halloween weekend, promising laughs, thrills and chills. The Green Room 42 is on the 4th Floor of YOTEL at 42nd Street and 10th Avenue. The concert version features an all-star cast, directed by Charles Repole with musical direction by Phil Reno. Tickets range between $22.50 and $62.50, and are available now online at: https://tinyurl.com/yyyo4vhn. There is no minimum required at GR42.

Great comedy is often the byproduct of political scandal and those who humorously comment on the news often overshadow the newsmakers themselves.  You might say that more Americans learned about the controversies of Presidents Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon from watching The Smothers Brothers and Mort Saul, rather than Walter Cronkite.  For over forty years our perceptions of world leaders have been defined more by the impersonations seen on Saturday Night Live than by actual news clips.  And today there are a multitude of television hosts combining comedy with deep analysis and investigative journalism to editorialize on the goings-on of the current administration.

Barbara Obermeier (Jellylorum/US Grizabella) and Stefan Konrad (Chairman of Nestwärme Austria) came up with the idea about doing a charity concert as a kickstart for NESTWÄRME in Austria after they ran into each other on the street. As Mondays are OFF-Days for Musical Actors in Vienna, there might be no better day to gather together some fine voices. Spending their only day off doing a concert for a good cause is something you never can take for granted. Obermeier and Konrad brought together an A-List of Top Acts, a few of them sadly had to cancel their performance due to sickness. Instead of cutting the set-list short, others took over some songs on a very short term. Charity Events are sometimes badly rehearsed and poorly staged. It takes a lot of tact and sensitivity and the right bunch of people when you want to create a night to remember. Konrad narrated through the evening with comedy and class. A first-class Conférencier who knows how to flirt with his audience in a charming way.
