Ojai Playwrights Conference (OPC), under the leadership of new Producing Artistic Director Jeremy B. Cohen, today announced the selection of playwrights for its 26th Annual New Works Festival to be held August 2 – 6 in Ojai, CA.

It’s only the third time the Maryland regional powerhouses have collaborated, and people still recall their only other two such efforts, “Angels in America” in 2016 and “In the Heights in 2017. “Fela!” will be equally well-remembered alongside them. 

The leading ladies are Broadway's Steffanie Leigh (Mary Poppins, War Paint), Isabelle McCalla (Aladdin, The Prom), Storm Lever (Six, The Donna Summer Musical) and Australia's own original 'Belle' from Beauty and the Beast, Rachael Beck.

White Heron Theatre Company of Nantucket will open it's first production of the 2023 summer season, Blithe Spirit, by Noël Coward (Present Laughter, Private Lives) and directed by Skip Greer. Greer returns to Nantucket after directing 2017's Outside Mullingar for White Heron.

Universal Theatrical Group (UTG), Universal Pictures’ live theater division, announced development of the musical IMITATION OF LIFE, based on the novel by Fannie Hurst and the Universal Pictures films, with book by Lynn Nottage, music and lyrics by John Legend, and directed by Liesl Tommy.

Playwrights receive a week-long workshop to develop their new plays followed by a public presentation in OPC's 26th Annual New Works Festival, August 2 - 6.

​​​​​​​Hudson Hall at the historic Hudson Opera House announces RODELINDA as the first in an ambitious multi-year series of operas by G.F. Handel with the daring, internationally acclaimed director (and Hudson resident) R.B. Schlather. Six performances take place October 20, 24, 26, 28 at 7pm and October 22 and 29 at 3pm.

The legendary choreographer Dougie Squires OBE MVO died peacefully on Sunday night, 21 May.

The Fisher Center at Bard has added a seventh performance (June 29 at 7:30 pm) to its world premiere production of Illinois, a music-theater work based on Sufjan Stevens’ acclaimed album of the same name.

The Atlanta Opera has announced that five creative teams have been selected to participate in the second annual 96-Hour Opera Project, a composition competition and showcase that pairs composers and librettists to write ten-minute operas. Bringing their completed works to Atlanta, the teams will workshop and rehearse their productions over four days from June 9–12, with travel, housing, singers, pianists and rehearsal space provided.

The August Wilson African American Cultural Center (AWAACC) has announced the opening of The Jo-Anne Bates Reading Room in the Victoria Gallery on March 22, 2023. AWAACC is proud to present original works by the Pittsburgh artist and philanthropist, and additionally, the Victoria Gallery will feature over 100 books and publications from her personal archive for you to view and explore.
