Folks Operetta continues its Reclaimed Voices Series with Paul Ábraham's exotic jazz operetta, The Flower of Hawaii featuring soprano and former Ms. Illinois Marisa Bucheit (2014) as Princess Laya/Suzanne. 

Young People's Theatre Workshop (YPTW) presents the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical State Fair on stage at the Players Club of Swarthmore May 24 to June 2. The State Fair cast includes 60 talented performers, ages 8-18, from the Philadelphia regional area. Show dates are May 24, 25, and June 1 at 7:30 p.m., May 27 at 6 p.m., May 28 and 30 at 7 p.m. and May 26 and June 2 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15, and all seats are reserved. It's all about the words, words, words for director Vivienne Benesch as she prepares to make her Folger Theatre debut with a new 1930s-styled production of Love's Labor's Lost.

With 'velvet stairs, easy chairs, and perfumed air gently blowing,' the Grand Hotel Berlin may not be a character in the traditional meaning of the word, however, it is the catalyst which sets in motion the fate of every guest who walks through its opulent revolving doors. For choreographer Kelly Crandall d'Amboise, it is her job to provide that motion as the production begins performances this week at Signature Theatre.

Mind vs. Matter. Game on. Folger Theatre concludes its 2018/19 season of characters that "shake the world" with Love's Labor's Lost, Shakespeare's quick-witted comedy filled with oaths, trickery, and confessions of love. Vivienne Benesch, the 2017 winner of the annual Zelda Fichandler Award, makes her Folger directorial debut.

The National Museum of American Jewish History (NMAJH) is pleased to announce its next special exhibition Sara Berman's Closet: a small and monumental story by Maira Kalman and Alex Kalman. An installation of one immigrant woman's belongings as re-created by Sara's daughter and grandson - the acclaimed artist and writer Maira Kalman and designer and curator Alex Kalman - the project will feature the Museum's first-ever public art installation on its Kimmel Plaza, on the corner of 5th and Market Streets. An accompanying art exhibition will continue in the Museum's special exhibition gallery, featuring new paintings by Maira Kalman and new sculptures by Alex Kalman and will include interventions throughout the core exhibition, as well as in-person appearances by the Kalmans throughout the run. Sara Berman's Closet will be on view April 5 through September 2, 2019.

A portrait of feminist Sylvia Plath, the impressive life story of the Afro-American freedom fighter Harriet Tubman, and life from behind a niqab, based on the work of three poets who participate in the Afghan Women's Writing Project. All of this can be experienced during the 14th edition of Operadagen Rotterdam. No fewer than 15 female composers will storm the opera bastion during the annual 10-day music theatre festival that takes place from 17 through 26 May 2019.

Dear Readers, today I want to talk to you about one of the most exciting companies in town and their latest show, The Williams Project's 'A Bright Room Called Day' by Tony Kushner. Specifically, I want to focus on three aspects of why they and their current show are so exciting and by the end I expect one if not all three aspects will entice you to catch this one, or at least I hope so.

BBC AMERICA will air Snatches: Moments From Women's Lives, a short film series featuring an all-female line-up of actors and writers, in the current events time slot on Sunday, November 4 at 9:00 am ET.  Snatches: Moments From Women's Lives airs in partnership with Jezebel and features an introduction by Jezebel Editor-in-Chief Julianne Escobedo Shepherd.

ZACH Theatre brings three great seasonal shows for everyone to share this 2018 Holiday Season. ZACH's rockin' holiday tradition, A Christmas Carol will return to The Topfer at ZACH for the fifth year November 21-December 30 with exciting new songs and new cast in addition to returning favorites. David Sedaris' ever-irreverent and giddily-cynical Macy's elf Crumpet is back with a new Crumpet, running on The Whisenhunt December 5-December 30. The awards ceremony pays tribute to the brilliant behind-the-scenes talent whose individual work contributes to the quality of a motion picture and to the lasting impression that it has on movie audiences. Hamilton celebrates watch appearances in more than 450 films and television shows, most recently Amazon's “Jack Ryan”. San Francisco Opera unveils a new production of Giacomo Puccini's Tosca on Wednesday, October 3, with a cast led by Italian soprano Carmen Giannattasio in her Company and role debuts as Tosca, tenor Brian Jagde as Cavaradossi and baritone Scott Hendricks as Baron Scarpia with conductor Leo Hussain leading the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and Chorus in his first performances with the Company. Puccini's monumental work, which has a distinguished history at San Francisco Opera, will be staged by American director Shawna Lucey with new sets and costumes designed by Robert Innes Hopkins and built entirely in San Francisco Opera's scenic and costume shops.
