Today in 2002, the fourth Broadway revival of Man of La Mancha opened at the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfeld Theatre), where it ran for 304 performances. Man of La Mancha is a musical with a book by Dale Wasserman, lyrics by Joe Darion and music by Mitch Leigh. It is adapted from Wasserman's non-musical 1959 teleplay I, Don Quixote, which was in turn inspired by Miguel de Cervantes's seventeenth century masterpiece Don Quixote. It tells the story of the 'mad' knight, Don Quixote, as a play within a play, performed by Cervantes and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition. The original 1965 Broadway production ran for 2,328 performances and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The musical has been revived four times on Broadway, becoming one of the most enduring works of musical theatre.

For its fall offering, the New England Regional Theatre Company mounted an ambitious and stirring production of Man of La Mancha at the Orion Performing Arts Center in Topsham, Maine. The sixteen-person cast and twelve-musician ensemble invested this touching revival with passion and intelligence. Directed by John Willey, the 1965 Dale Wasserman-Mitch Leigh-Joe Darrion musical based on Miguel de Cervantes' epic novel, Don Quixote still burns with intensity, idealism, and a much-needed antidote in a chaotic modern world - the courage and hope to 'fight for the right' and follow the quest.
Willey strikes the right balance between comedy and drama, and he handles the musical's framing device - that of Cervantes recounting his tale in a prison of the Inquisition - with visual and theatrical aplomb. He keeps the entire cast on stage for the duration and uses the exceptionally wide Orion space inventively, so that the action flows naturally and his musical staging is completely organic. Moreover, he elicits from his actors a fervent luminosity that proves inspiring.

Thrown into prison to answer to the Spanish Inquisition on trumped-up charges, Miguel Cervantes finds himself surrounded by criminals and outcasts. To plead his innocence, he enlists his cellmates to help him reenact the legend of Don Quixote, the greatest knight of all. MAN OF LA MANCHA is one of the shows that has rarely been performed in recent years, and it is one that I have never seen before this performance. I feel fortunate that my first time seeing this musical, which is a well-known story, was at Act II Playhouse. MAN OF LA MANCHA at Act II Playhouse is a triumph on many levels beginning with the performances to the set. I was impressed with this production from start to finish, and this is one show that should not be missed at Act II Playhouse.

There are many excellent reasons why Man of La Mancha has been one of Broadway's most beloved and enduring musicals. Many of the show's songs are gorgeous and stunning, especially 'The Impossible Dream,' which has become a standard and taken on a life of its own, beyond the confines of the musical. A number of important and universal themes also run through the play, including religion vs. science, the power of imagination, the power of faith, and how believing in something can change us and change our lives. Unfortunately, many of those reasons, from the power of the music to the deeply human themes are absent in this lackluster and lifeless touring production. It's hard to say exactly why or how, but it's undeniable that something is missing. The electricity, the energy, the human connections are completely missing in this production where every line is a rote line reading and every song is robbed of any kind of emotional depth or connection.
