Tony Award-winning director of Broadway's Man of La Mancha Albert Marre died on September 4, according to The New York Times. He was 87.

Today in 1992, the third Broadway revival of Man of La Mancha closed at the Marquis Theatre, where it ran for 108 performances. Man of La Mancha is a musical with a book by Dale Wasserman, lyrics by Joe Darion and music by Mitch Leigh. It is adapted from Wasserman's non-musical 1959 teleplay I, Don Quixote, which was in turn inspired by Miguel de Cervantes's seventeenth century masterpiece Don Quixote. It tells the story of the 'mad' knight, Don Quixote, as a play within a play, performed by Cervantes and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition.The original 1965 Broadway production ran for 2,328 performances and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The musical has been revived four times on Broadway, becoming one of the most enduring works of musical theatre.

In this 1965 musical, Don Quixote and his faithful servant Sancho Panza go on their thrilling ride to battle evil, rescue maidens and right all wrongs. The score includes 'The Impossible Dream,' 'Dulcinea,' and 'I, Don Quixote.'

Fresh from the Off-Broadway production of The Fantasticks, long time entertainer, TV host and stage performer John Davidson will be appearing as Don Quixote for the third time-this time with the new Ocean Professional Theater Company's (OPTC) production of Man of La Mancha.

MAN OF LA MANCHA, opened on Broadway in 1965. This Tony Award Winner for Best Musical features one of Broadway's great standards, 'The Impossible Dream,' and takes place during the height of the Spanish Inquisition. While awaiting a hearing with the Inquisition, Miguel de Cervantes presents a play as his defense in a mock trial for the prisoners. In it, he plays Alonso Quijana, a man who has set his own reality aside and becomes Don Quixote De La Mancha. Assisted by Sancho Panza, Quixote attempts to avoid his mortal enemy, the Enchanter, and woo the serving wench and prostitute, Aldonza, who he takes to be the Lady Dulcinea.
