Intended initially for a limited run, and turning into a 2+ year hit, Newsies, featuring a score with music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman, with a book by four-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein, will play its final performance at Broadway's Nederlander Theatre onS unday, August 24, 2014 prior to launching its national tour in October. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) hosts the 41ST Annual Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony tonight, June 22. CBS' The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless lead the pack with the most nominations. 4) JERSEY BOYS Movie Box Office Update; Weekend Numbers Drop Further

In further disappointing news for the Jersey Boys film, Nikki Finke reports that the film, which opened in nearly 3,000 theatres has further dropped its expected weekend gross from $14.5 million to $13.5 million. The $40 million dollar film made nearly $5 million on Friday, and $5.4 million on Saturday. (more...)

The Hollywood Bowl hosted its 15th Annual Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame concert last night, June 21. Emmy and Tony-winner Kristin Chenoweth was inducted by Carol Burnett, her life-long idol. As she made her entrance, Chenoweth paid homage to her by singing the theme song from The Carol Burnett Show. Later in the evening, Chenoweth was joined on stage by Lea Michele, with whom she co-starred with on the television series GLEE in 2009. Chenoweth and Michele sang WICKED's 'For Good' together. 12) BWW CD Reviews: A Second Take on GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE

Back in April, I had the pleasure of reviewing A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER (Original Broadway Cast Recording). My initial thoughts were that the recording was witty and intriguing, but without the context of the show I couldn't really connect with it. Conversely, I got to see a recent performance of the Tony Award winning comedic musical. Upon revisiting the album, I can't shake most of the deliciously clever songs. (more...)

During her run in the Broadway play Frankie and Johnny, a technical error caused the lights to turn on while she was naked on stage. She recalled, 'It got an audible gasp. 18) STAGE TUBE: On This Day 6/22- MAN OF LA MANCHA

Today in 1972, the first Broadway revival of Man of La Mancha opened at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre, where it ran for 140 performances. Man of La Mancha is a musical with a book by Dale Wasserman, lyrics by Joe Darion and music by Mitch Leigh. It is adapted from Wasserman's non-musical 1959 teleplay I, Don Quixote, which was in turn inspired by Miguel de Cervantes's seventeenth century masterpiece Don Quixote. It tells the story of the 'mad' knight, Don Quixote, as a play within a play, performed by Cervantes and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition.The original 1965 Broadway production ran for 2,328 performances and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The musical has been revived four times on Broadway, becoming one of the most enduring works of musical theatre. (more...)

Back in May, the Manhattan Theatre Club, by special arrangement with Colin Callender, Robert Cole, Frederick Zollo and The Shubert Organization, announced an extension for Casa Valentina, the world premiere play by four-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein, directed by two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello. An additional two weeks were added to the critically acclaimed limited engagement, through Sunday, June 29th and no more extensions are planned. (more...)
