Intended initially for a limited run, and turning into a 2+ year hit, Newsies, featuring a score with music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman, with a book by four-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein, will play its final performance at Broadway's Nederlander Theatre onS unday, August 24, 2014 prior to launching its national tour in October. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) hosts the 41ST Annual Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony tonight, June 22. CBS' The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless lead the pack with the most nominations. Theatre names in the mix include CABARET's Alan Cumming, Tony-winning composer and lyricist Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Broadway actress Ashley Tisdale. (more...)

The Hollywood Bowl hosted its 15th Annual Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame concert last night, June 21, featuring Hall of Fame inductees Emmy and Tony-winner Kristin Chenoweth, iconic all-female band The Go-Go's, and the eclectic band Pink Martini. Presenters included Oscar and Emmy winner Helen Hunt, Grammy-nominated singer Natasha Bedingfield, Hollywood icon Barbara Eden, actress/comedienne Carol Burnett, and Oscar-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson, as well as a special guest appearance by Lea Michele. (more...)

In further disappointing news for the Jersey Boys film, Nikki Finke reports that the film, which opened in nearly 3,000 theatres has further dropped its expected weekend gross from $14.5 million to $13.5 million. The $40 million dollar film made nearly $5 million on Friday, and $5.4 million on Saturday. (more...)

In a profile for The Boston Globe, mega-producer, theater-owner and all-around theatre impresario Cameron Mackintosh revealed he thinks Neil Patrick Harris would be 'perfect' to star in his reworked version of BARNUM, which is set to launch a UK tour this September (starring Brian Conley). The Hollywood Bowl hosted its 15th Annual Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame concert last night, June 21. Emmy and Tony-winner Kristin Chenoweth was inducted by Carol Burnett, her life-long idol. As she made her entrance, Chenoweth paid homage to her by singing the theme song from The Carol Burnett Show. Later in the evening, Chenoweth was joined on stage by Lea Michele, with whom she co-starred with on the television series GLEE in 2009. Chenoweth and Michele sang WICKED's 'For Good' together. Tony winner Karen Olivo, who announced last spring that she'd be leaving New York City behind for a quieter life in Wisconsin, will return to the stage in this production. Back in April, I had the pleasure of reviewing A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER (Original Broadway Cast Recording). My initial thoughts were that the recording was witty and intriguing, but without the context of the show I couldn't really connect with it. Conversely, I got to see a recent performance of the Tony Award winning comedic musical. Upon revisiting the album, I can't shake most of the deliciously clever songs. (more...)

The New York Post writes that author and lawyer Henry Bushkin is kicking off rehearsals for a musical based on his book about Johnny Carson and THE TONIGHT SHOW. Jazz artist Steve Tyrell is writing the music, with rehearsals set to begin at Bushkin's home in upstate Bedford this summer. (more...)

Mothers and Sons, starring the two-time 2014 Tony® Award nominee for Best Play and Leading Actress in a Play (Tyne Daly), will play its final performance at the Sunday, June 22nd matinee at the John Golden Theatre (252 West 45th Street). At the time of its closing, Mothers and Sons will have played 33 preview performances and 104 regular performances. (more...)

Edie Falco told The Hollywood Reporter about her experience of being caught naked on stage. During her run in the Broadway play Frankie and Johnny, a technical error caused the lights to turn on while she was naked on stage. She recalled, 'It got an audible gasp. Then the curtains went down and we started again like it didn't happen.' (more...)

Today in 1972, the first Broadway revival of Man of La Mancha opened at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre, where it ran for 140 performances. Man of La Mancha is a musical with a book by Dale Wasserman, lyrics by Joe Darion and music by Mitch Leigh. It is adapted from Wasserman's non-musical 1959 teleplay I, Don Quixote, which was in turn inspired by Miguel de Cervantes's seventeenth century masterpiece Don Quixote. It tells the story of the 'mad' knight, Don Quixote, as a play within a play, performed by Cervantes and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition.The original 1965 Broadway production ran for 2,328 performances and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The musical has been revived four times on Broadway, becoming one of the most enduring works of musical theatre. (more...)

Back in May, the Manhattan Theatre Club, by special arrangement with Colin Callender, Robert Cole, Frederick Zollo and The Shubert Organization, announced an extension for Casa Valentina, the world premiere play by four-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein, directed by two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello. An additional two weeks were added to the critically acclaimed limited engagement, through Sunday, June 29th and no more extensions are planned. (more...)
