BWW Reviews: Savvy and Sassy LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS an Enjoyable Musical Romp

Some three decades after its first premiere, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS still delivers on its promise to be an enjoyable romp for its audiences. In this production, there is a great deal of fun to be had in the kind of musical that offers only the slightest commentary on the world around us - 'whatever they offer you, don't feed the plants' - and mostly expects its viewers to kick back, relax and go along for the ride.

Breaking News: Jake Gyllenhaal Will Make Musical Debut in Encores! LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS This Summer!

Jake Gyllenhaal, Chuck Cooper and Taran Killam will join the previously announced Ellen Greene in the Encores! Off-Center concert production ofHoward Ashman and Alan Menken's Little Shop of Horrors, running July 1-2, 2015. NOTE: A third performance has been added at 2pm on Thursday, July 2 in order to meet ticket demand. The production will be directed by Dick Scanlan, with choreography by Patricia Wilcox. Jeanine Tesori is the Artistic Director of Encores! Off-Center, and Chris Fenwick is Music Director. The show will mark the musical theater debuts of both Gyllenhaal and Killam.

Music Theatre of Connecticut MainStage, Fairfield County's award-winning professional theatre company, concludes its 2014/2015 season with 'Little Shop of Horrors' the hit rock musical comedy about a hapless florist shop worker, the girl of his dreams and one very voracious plant. With book and lyrics by Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken. Performances are April 17-May 3, Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 4pm and 8pm, Sundays at 2pm, at The Melissa & Doug Theatre at The New MTC, 509 Westport Avenue (behind the Jones New York and Nine West Outlet) in Norwalk, CT. The Off-Broadway League has announced details for the 2015 Lucille Lortel Awards, which will celebrate 30 years of recognizing Outstanding Achievement Off-Broadway. The 30th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards will be handed out on Sunday, May 10, 2015 at the NYU Skirball Center, beginning at 7:00 PM EST. The program will be co-hosted by Emmy Award Nominees Jesse Tyler Ferguson ("Modern Family") and Anna Chlumsky ("Veep," Broadway's upcoming "Living on Love").

According to the New York Times, Encores! has just announced the upcoming 2015 season for its Off-Center series. Included in the line-up is William Finn's A New Brain (running June 24-27), starring Jonathan Groff; Andrew Lippa's The Wild Party (running July 15-18), starring Off-Center veteran Sutton Foster; and Little Shop of Horrors (running July 1), with original cast member Ellen Greene.

Little Shop of Horrors will open the new season at Theatre Lawrence, September 19-October 5! Winner of the best musical of 1983, this affectionate spoof of 1950's Sci-fi movies became one of Off Broadway's longest running shows. First seen as the 1960's black comedy by Roger Corman and screenplay by Charles Griffith, featuring Jack Nicholson, it then opened as the rock horror musical in 1982. The show combines the musical styles of 60's rock 'n' roll, do-wop and MoTown and includes several well known tunes such as Skid Row (Downtown), Somewhere That's Green, and Suddenly, Seymour.
