Berkeley Playhouse opens their tenth season of professional theater for family audiences with the East Bay premiere of Alan Menken's heavenly musical comedy, Sister Act. Based on the hit 1992 film, audiences will be praising the toe-tapping, gospel infused score from Tony and eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop of Horrors, The Little Mermaid). When downtown disco diva Dolores Van Cartier witnesses a crime, she's placed into protective custody in the one place she's sure not to be found - a convent! Forced to trade in her nighttime habit of nightclubbing and disco dancing for a nun's habit, Dolores finds newfound self-worth, confidence, and a community she never expected to be a part of, as she leads her fellow Sisters to heavenly new heights, and transforms their church into a revitalized home of celebration, song, and community spirit. Filled with powerful music, outrageous choreography, and a moving story of unlikely friendships, Sister Act will raise the roof of the historic Julia Morgan theater, which itself was originally built in 1910 as a community church. Crowded Fire Theater (CFT), known as a vital home for new play development and production on the West Coast, announced Sara Huddleston, Heather Kelly-Laws, Alice Ruiz, and Randy Wong-Westbrooke as the second year IGNITE FUND awardees. The IGNITE FUND awards $10,000 in total annually to support the growth of and enhance the working lives of Bay Area theater designers and technicians through a competitive grant process.

Portland Center Stage at The Armory's 30th anniversary season opens with the groundbreaking, Tony Award-winning musical Fun Home. Created by Jeanine Tesori (music) and Lisa Kron (book and lyrics) and based on the celebrated graphic memoir by Alison Bechdel, Fun Home will begin preview performances on September 16, open September 22, and run through October 22 on The Armory's U.S. Bank Main Stage. Artistic Director Chris Coleman will direct a cast lead by Allison Mickelson, Sara Masterson and Aida Valentine as the central character, Alison, at three different ages. Robert Mammana (previously at The Armory as Skye Masterson in Guys and Dolls and Father in Ragtime) and Faith Sandberg will play Alison's parents, Bruce and Helen Bechdel.

Coronado Playhouse presents Little Shop of Horrors, opening Friday September 8th running until Sunday, October 15th, 2017 at Coronado Playhouse. Little Shop of Horrors is an horticultural horror story: sci-fi spoof musical with a hilarious and fearsome plot and a collection of great songs. Seymour Krelborn, the assistant at Mushnik's Flower Shop in downtrodden Skid Row, becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers a strange and exotic plant. He names it Audrey Two in order to impress glamorous Audrey, the colleague he's secretly in love with. Audrey Two quickly starts to wilt, putting Seymour's job and dream future with Audrey at risk. Accidentally pricking his finger, Seymour discovers Audrey Two needs a little more than plant food to thrive. The plant grows into a bad-tempered, R&B-singing carnivore whose voracious appetite becomes increasingly difficult to satisfy. 

Come on babe, why don't we paint the town! The City Theatre Company is thrilled to top off its 2017 summer theatre season with the most razzle - dazzling of stage musical greats Chicago, now the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. The production runs August 18th - September 10th at City Theatre Austin.

The Hollywood Bowl's production of Mamma Mia! begins tonight, July 28, at 8 PM and continues Saturday, July 29, at 8 PM and Sunday, July 30, at 7:30 PM.

Summer wouldn't be the same in Los Angeles without the Hollywood Bowl's annual offering of a star-studded Broadway musical; and this year will be no different when the mega-hit Mamma Mia! getting ready to ignite on one of the world's most iconic stages July 28 - 30.  BroadwayWorld TV's own Michael Sterling dropped in at rehearsals earlier this week to get a sneak peek at rehearsals and to speak with members of the cast.  Featured in Mamma Mia! are Corbin Bleu as Sky, Dove Cameron as Sophie, Jaime Camil as Sam, Tisha-Campbell-Martin as Tanya, Lea DeLaria as Rosie, Hamish Linklater as Harry, Jennifer Nettles as Donna, and Steven Weber as Bill.

Producers Lorne Michaels and Stuart Thompson have announced casting for the world premiere of the Broadway-bound new musical Mean Girls with a book by nine-time Emmy Award winner Tina Fey, based on her screenplay for the Paramount Pictures film; music by three-time Emmy Award winner Jeff Richmond; and lyrics by Tony Award nominee Nell Benjamin. Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw directs and choreographs.
