Updated Schedule Announced For Heartbeat Of Mexico Festival At Musco Center

From the brightest minds in the field of Mexican cultural studies to the brightest stars in the world of Latin entertainment, the Musco Center for the Art's Fourth Annual Heartbeat of Mexico Festival will offer a greatly expanded cast and calendar on the Chapman University campus in Orange over Memorial Weekend, May 23-26, 2019. In association with Chapman University's Latinx Staff & Faculty Forum, Heartbeat of Mexico will include an afternoon of free Ballet Folklorico inside historic Memorial Hall, a free day-long family-friendly outdoor celebration with music, dance, crafts for kids and food, and two nights of music headliners: superstar duo Jesse & Joy on Thursday, May 23 and Lupillo Rivera performing with Mariachi on Sunday, May 26. 

Alonzo King To Receive Honorary Doctorate At Juilliard Commencement Ceremony

Alonzo King LINES Ballet is pleased to announce that choreographer Alonzo King will receive an honorary doctorate from Juilliard during the school's 114th commencement ceremony, which takes place Friday, May 24, 2019, at 11am in Alice Tully Hall in New York City and will be live-streamed at juilliard.edu/live. Actress Rita Moreno and composer Kaija Saariaho will receive honorary doctorates as well.

Garden Theatre is known for its professional stage shows, education programs, and summer Milk Money Movies, but the theatre is now expanding into interactive movies for film buffs of all ages. In the 2019 - 2020 season, the Garden will host six Interactive Movie events. SHOWTIME has announced that Emmy and Tony® nominee Pablo Schreiber (First Man, Orange Is the New Black) has been cast as the lead in the highly anticipated SHOWTIME series HALO, based on the iconic Xbox® franchise. Schreiber will play Master Chief, Earth's most advanced warrior in the 26th century and the only hope of salvation for a civilization pushed to the brink of destruction by the Covenant, an unstoppable alliance of alien worlds committed to the destruction of humanity. Newcomer Yerin Ha will play a new character within the HALO world: Quan Ah, a shrewd, audacious 16-year-old from the Outer Colonies who meets Master Chief at a fateful time for them both. The series is produced by SHOWTIME in partnership with 343 Industries, along with Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television and will begin production this fall in Budapest, Hungary.

Brooklyn's AOP To Select Composers, Librettists For Two Years Of Free Training In The Fundamentals Of Opera

American Opera Projects (AOP) announces the return of its popular Composers & the Voice program for its 2019-21 seasons. Created and led by Composers & the Voice Artistic Director Steven Osgood, six composers and up to three librettists will be selected for two-year fellowships to learn the fundamentals of writing for the voice and opera stage. Workshop sessions with professional opera singers, mentors, and instructors are held at AOP's home base in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Applications and complete information will be available beginning March 18 at www.aopopera.org/composers_voice. The deadline for applications is April 26 with fellowships announced by July 16.

Just until this Sunday, March 17th, you can catch well-known Broadway musical Miss Saigon at Wharton Center for the Performing Arts in East Lansing. Inspired heavily by Giacomo Puccini's opera entitled Madama Butterfly, Miss Saigon first played on Broadway from 1991 until 2001 and has had several worldwide productions ever since, including a 2017 Broadway revival. Though this show has often been met with controversy throughout its history, the U.S. national tour currently hitting East Lansing does its best to portray the Vietnam War as honestly as possible.

Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Celebrates 125th Anniversary

The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO) and Music Director Louis Langree announced details of the much-anticipated 125th Anniversary Season beginning in September at Music Hall. The 2019-20 season welcomes acclaimed guest artists including Renee Fleming, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Artist-in-Residence Guy Braunstein and Grammy winner Isabel Leonard, among others. The season includes performances of Beethoven's legendary Akademie program, a fully staged production of Ravel's opera, L'Enfant et les sortileges, seven CSO commissions, five world premieres, three U.S. premieres, as well as an experimental new concert series titled CSO Proof. The 125th Anniversary Season marks the launch of new initiatives both on and off the stage that build on the CSO's legacy.
