Following critical acclaim at the Savoy Theatre, the Chichester Festival Theatre revival of Guys and Dolls transfers to the Phoenix Theatre whilst simultaneously touring the UK this spring. The West End production opened 19 March and is booking until 30 October, whilst the UK tour is running simultaneously, opening in Liverpool on 16 March and touring throughout the UK until 30 July, closing in Woking. Today, March 14, 2016, Asolo Rep and the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training announced their 2016-17 seasons to more than 350 patrons in the Mertz Theatre, located in the FSU Center for the Performing Arts.

The busiest times of the musical theater world is quickly coming amongst us, especially for high school thespians- spring show season. Community and local theaters are either holding auditions or waiting for a stressful week of tech before productions that have the potential to be massive moments in the theater and community history.  For high school students, this is the most exhilarating, yet draining, season of the year. Fortunately- I am one of these students. 

Today in 2009, Guys and Dolls opened at the Nederlander Theatre, where it ran for 121 performances. Guys and Dolls is a musical with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. It is based on 'The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown' and 'Blood Pressure', two short stories by Damon Runyon, and also borrows characters and plot elements from other Runyon stories, most notably 'Pick the Winner'. Premiering on Broadway in 1950, the original production ran for 1200 performances and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The musical has had several Broadway revivals as well as West End productions.

The BBC have denied to BWW:UK that they are planning to film the current West End run of Guys and Dolls at the Savoy.

Casting for the West End extension includes multiple Olivier Award-winning actress Samantha Spiro (Hello Dolly) as Miss Adelaide, Richard Kind (Disney/Pixar's BAFTA award-wining Inside Out) as Nathan Detroit and Oliver Tompsett (Wicked) as Sky Masterson. Continuing in their roles from the Savoy to the Phoenix Theatre are Siubhan Harrison as Sarah Brown, and Gavin Spokes as Nicely Nicely Johnson.

As BroadwayWorld reported this morning, Bette Midler will indeed return to Broadway in one of the most cherished shows in musical theater history when she takes on the role of Dolly Gallagher Levi in Michael Stewart's (book) and Jerry Herman's (music and lyrics) masterpiece, Hello, Dolly!. Directed by four-time Tony Award® winner Jerry Zaks, Hello, Dolly! will begin performances on Broadway on March 13, 2017, with an official opening night of April 20, 2017. Rehearsals begin one year from today. There are few titles in the American Musical cannon that are as beloved as GUYS AND DOLLS. The show about loveable gangsters and gamblers in 1920s and 30s New York has been thrilling audiences around the world since 1950. With music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and a book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, GUYS AND DOLLS is often held up beside MY FAIR LADY and GYPSY as the epitome of the musical theatre artform. Guys and Dolls has a long musical history. Originating and premiering on Broadway in 1950 and winning the Tony Award for Best Musical the following year, the show was soon turned into a film starring Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra, which it is most fondly recognised for. There have been a multitude of successful revivals over the years and this one is currently enjoying a couple of pre-West End engagements before it opens at the Savoy Theatre for a limited run, starting next month.

Sometimes it seems there is so much theater happening that it's difficult to keep track of it all. From personal experience, despite all the datebooks, smart phones, tablets, desktop computers and laptops...it's hard to keep everything straight in this wacky business of the show.

As this is one of my favourite musicals it was a pleasure to see it performed so well.
