For the 2016-2017 no 'shrinking violet' opening of the Cabot Theatre Stage, Skylight Music Theatre presents the 1997 award-winning musical, Violet. Set in the mid 1960's, the Broadway Theatre Center production relates to a young woman's journey when her father accidentally disfigured her face and left a traumatic facial scar amid the burgeoning civil rights movement and beginnings of the Vietnam war. When Violet travels from North Carolina to Oklahoma carrying her dream and hope that a faith healer will remove the scar, the young Southern woman encounters various people on her Greyhound bus ride to remind the audience life's miracles arise in multiple forms when the heart opens the eyes and mind and removes the mundane from the material world.

Porchlight Music Theatre (PMT) and Artistic Director Michael Weber previously announced the initial production in the fourth season of Chicago's 'lost' musicals in staged concert series, Porchlight Revisits The Rink, starring Hollis Resnik and Christine Mild, music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb and book by Terrence McNally, with direction and choreography by PMT Artistic Associate Christopher Pazdernik and musical direction by Ryan Brewster. Porchlight Revisits The Rink is presented for three-nights-only tonight, Oct. 4 through Thursday, Oct. 6 at 7:15 p.m. and is performed on the set of Porchlight's In The Heights (previews begin September 9) at Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont Ave.

The Matrix Theatre Company opened their 2016-2017 season with Sizwe Bansi is Dead, an incredibly thought provoking play, by Athol Fugard, John Kani, and Winston Ntshona. The three-man play directed by Oliver Pookrum is a powerful story about man living under apartheid rule in South Africa whose only hope for financially supporting his family means he must relinquish his very name.

PRIMARY STAGES announced today that the New York premiere of FADE, written by Tanya Saracho (Mala Hierba) and directed by Jerry Ruiz (Basilica), will now play on the Primary Stages Mainstage in January of 2017 at the Cherry Lane Theatre (38 Commerce St, New York, NY, 10014). FADE will occupy the Mainstage slot previously held by CITIZEN: AN AMERICAN LYRIC, which will be postponed to allow for further development prior to its New York premiere. CITIZEN will have a developmental workshop at Arts Emerson in Boston in March 2017.

Brand New Heavies featuring N'Dea Davenport will be playing select American dates this summer showcasing brand new music to be released in 2016 and 2017. The band plan to release and EP of new material, entitled TBNHND (Ear Music/Edel) as well as the sequel to The Heavy Rhyme Experience Vol. I originally released in 1992. The album featured collaborations with Guru of Gang Starr, Grand Puba, Main Source, and The Pharcyde to name a few and Brand New Heavies will be recording the next volume in New York City next month, announcing collaborators soon. This batch of new music follows 2014's Sweet Freaks.

For its 2016-17 season, the 33-year-old Raven Theatre Company will again bring new plays and playwrights to Chicago audiences along with revivals of classic and lesser-known works by masters of modern drama. Michael Menendian, producing artistic director, today announced a lineup that includes the early Tennessee Williams play Not About Nightingales and Pinter'sBetrayal as well as the Midwest premieres of Richard Greenberg's recent Broadway hit The Assembled Parties and Red Velvet by Lolita Chakrabarti, one of the U.K.'s most acclaimed new playwrights, and the world premiere of Sycamore - a drama of contemporary family life set in the Midwest by New York-based playwright Sarah Sander.
