The GI Film Festival San Diego, now in its fifth year, opens with a heartfelt documentary short, “Take Me Home Huey” featuring the transformation of a U.S. Army Huey helicopter into a colorful, inspirational sculpture by contemporary artist and Southern California resident Steve Maloney.

Folger Theatre opens the 2019/20 season with 1 Henry IV, Shakespeare's richly layered coming-of-age tale of power, rebellion, honor, and redemption. The production is directed by Rosa Joshi (co-founder of Seattle's upstart crow collective theater company in Seattle; Henry V and As You Like It at Oregon Shakespeare Festival), who makes her DC directorial debut at the Folger.

It was 1968 when literary giant Horace Mungin penned his first published work, 'Dope Hustler's Jazz,' part one of a two volume set of anti-drug poetry. 'Dope Hustler's Jazz' was the beginning of a writing career that started in the Black Arts Movement and would extend over five decades of literary contributions.

SculptureCenter has announced the appointment of Christian Rattemeyer to the position of Director effective November 1, 2019. Rattemeyer joins the museum after 12 years at The Museum of Modern Art, where he served as Associate Curator in the Department of Drawings and Prints. He succeeds Mary Ceruti who is now Executive Director of the Walker Art Center.

The French Institute Alliance Fran aise (FIAF), New York's premier French cultural and language center, today announced the 2019 Crossing the Line Festival, featuring 11 performances and a gallery exhibition from a geographically, generationally, and artistically diverse group of artists whose work transcends genres and boundaries. All performances are world, US, or New York premieres; they are united by their convention-breaking fearlessness as they confront topics from social injustice to personal demons. Many of the performances pay homage to legendary artists of our time and previous eras, while the theme of migration and its transformational effects on identity informs several others. On public view at the Grolier Club from May 15 to July 27, 2019, the exhibition brings together over 200 extraordinary books, manuscripts, photographs, and other objects to show how this obscure young New Yorker transformed himself into one of America's great artists, the Poet of the Body: New York's Walt Whitman.

TheaterWorks and the Wadsworth Museum of Art are joining forces to present drag superstar Varla Jean Merman in her one-woman comedy cabaret Under a Big Top on Sunday, June 23rd at 7pm. Marlborough has announced its international unification of exhibition programming. The Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers is pleased to announce Mister Deviant, Comrade Degenerate: Selected Works by Yevgeniy Fiks, a new summer exhibition on view June 15 through July 31, 2019. The nine works, consisting of still photographs and multimedia installations, address the subject of the political deviant, the sexual outlaw, and the uncensored artist, who all became the shared others for the Cold War-era Soviets and Americans, and remain a problematic political legacy that resonates today. Fiks will attend an opening reception on Saturday, June 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Now celebrating its 41st year, the annual Museum Mile Festival takes place rain or shine on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Over 1.5 million people have taken part in this annual celebration since its inception. Festival attendees can walk the Mile on Fifth Avenue between 82nd Street and 105th Street while visiting seven of New York City's finest cultural institutions, which are open free to the public throughout the evening. The Museum Mile Festival's opening ceremony takes place at 5:45pm at El Museo del Barrio, 1230 Fifth Avenue at 105th Street. Traditionally, the Commissioner of Cultural Affairs and other city and state dignitaries open the Festival.

On March 29th, musician Chogyi Lama, grandson of singer-songwriter and guitarist Richie Havens, performed at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts at the historic site of the 1969 Woodstock festival to officially open the nonprofit cultural art organization's Season of Song and Celebration.

Mind vs. Matter. Game on. Folger Theatre concludes its 2018/19 season of characters that "shake the world" with Love's Labor's Lost, Shakespeare's quick-witted comedy filled with oaths, trickery, and confessions of love. Vivienne Benesch, the 2017 winner of the annual Zelda Fichandler Award, makes her Folger directorial debut.
