During and prior to the Golden Age of Broadway, songs regularly premiered on stage and then charted, spending time on the radio and becoming popular worldwide. In the 1960s, Broadway songs and popular music diverged, and work from musicals was no longer synonymous with chart hits. There have certainly been a good share of exceptions since that decade, as Broadway has evolved to mirror popular, current music genres. Several of the songs that have broken through to the Billboard charts can be heard on Broadway! 

The history of shows that have transferred from off-Broadway to Broadway is well documented. Hundreds of Broadway plays and musicals started out off-Broadway before making the leap to a Broadway house. But much more rare is the circumstance of a show starting out off-off-Broadway (that’s right, two ‘off’s!) and traveling all the way to the main stem. One of these shows is playing right now, and is a major theatre success story with off-off-Broadway roots!

Playwright, director, and screenwriter Afrika Brown will present a special staged reading of her newest play, Horizons and Higher Mountains, on MLK Day, Monday, January 19, 2026, at The Flea Theater's Pete Theater in New York City.

Leonard Bernstein’s bold, genre-defying Mass returns to the stage of Theatro Municipal de São Paulo for two special performances on December 19 (8 p.m.) and 20 (5 p.m.). Conducted by Roberto Minczuk, the production brings together the São Paulo Municipal Symphony Orchestra, the Coral Paulistano and the Lírico Choir, with Tony Award–winning baritone Paulo Szot as the Celebrant. Blending traditional Catholic liturgy with rock, jazz, musical theatre and protest songs, Mass reflects the social unrest and spiritual questioning of the 1970s while remaining strikingly relevant today. The performances also mark the Municipal debut of musical-theatre star Beto Sargentelli, whose presence bridges the worlds of opera and contemporary musical theatre.

On Saturday, November 15, at 7:00 P.M., I had the pleasure of my very first experience with the Broadway on Main Theatre Company in East Haven, Connecticut, to see a phenomenal production of MARY POPPINS! This theater features scenery projections on the back of the stage wall and on the side house walls, to immerse the audience into the show, with a constant 270 degree visual experience! Sometimes the projections include motion, even moving images of some of the characters in the show! This is a unique concept, brilliantly applied, enhancing the quality of the production! This is a highly memorable show, wonderful for the whole family!

Specific events in the intimate world of Anatevka, Russia are presented in a manner that propels universal understanding of the relevant themes of family, forgiveness, acceptance, and tolerance in the highly immersive and interactive staging of the renowned classic Fiddler on the Roof, now at the Signature Theatre. The engaging ensemble assembled here under the ingenious direction of Joe Calarco, shows why this landmark 1964 musical has spawned so many stage revivals through the decades as well as a magnificent 1971 film. During his prolific and storied career, Sondheim collaborated with many other artists, from book writers to directors, from actors to musicians. Seeing Sondheim’s regular collaborators, close friends, one-time associates, mentors, and rare connections make appearances in his collection was both moving and illuminating.

The collection documents songs that made it into Sondheim’s musicals, and it also documents cut or unused songs that were edited out of shows before they opened. Rarest of all, it documents songs that were never finished. These are not the rarities that made it into Marry Me a Little or a Sondheim compilation album. Rather, they are sketches of songs that provide a window into Sondheim’s process while creating a score and show him developing characters and determining the details of what are now iconic musicals.

Houston Grand Opera has announced the appointment of American conductor James Gaffigan as the fifth Music Director in the company's 70-year history.

Moses Pendleton, founder and artistic director of the dance-theatre company MOMIX, will receive The University of Texas at Dallas’ 2025 Richard Brettell Award in the Arts on November 1. The biennial award, which carries a $150,000 prize, is the highest honor the university bestows upon artists.

Diane Keaton made her Broadway debut in the original Broadway production of Hair at the age of 22. The landmark musical started out at the Public Theater off-Broadway in 1967 before transferring to the Biltmore Theatre on Broadway in 1968. Keaton joined the cast for the Broadway run, originating her track in the show.
