Drury Lane Theatre announces a one-night-only event with celebrated author Todd S. Purdum, in connection with its acclaimed production of the Tony Award-winning musical South Pacific. Purdum is the author of the new book SOMETHING WONDERFUL: A Rogers and Hammerstein's Broadway Revolution. During the evening, Purdum will read excerpts from his new book and answer questions about the famed duo and their works. Guests will receive a signed copy of SOMETHING WONDERFUL and enjoy dinner at Lucille Restaurant, followed by a performance of South Pacific. Opera Saratoga's Artistic and General Director Lawrence Edelson announced the complete casting and programming for the company's 2018 Summer Festival, which will feature new productions of four operas at The Spa Little Theater in Spa State Park, along with a wide variety of free and ticketed concert events from May 26th through July 15th at venues throughout the region. Broadway Associate Director Michael Bradshaw Flynn The Front Page, It's Only A Play leads a talented cast, including Broadway Alums Autumn Guzzardi 9 to 5, Escape to Margaritaville (Pre-Broadway Tour) and Danielle Sue Jordan Follies (w/Bernadette Peters), Cinderella and The Music Man (1st National Tours) in the 2004 Award-Winning play, Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead written by acclaimed Stage, TV and Film writer Bert V. Royal (Easy 'A' (w/Emma Stone), Recovery Road (ABC) . Founded in 1993 by Artistic Director Martin Santangelo and globally acclaimed dancer Soledad Barrio, Noche Flamenca honors the raw and rapturous art of flamenco while stretching tradition to explore the human experience in its many varieties. Barrio, whom The New York Times has deemed one of today's great dancers of any genre, performs with a cast of exceptional flamenco dancers and musicians, many hailing from Spain.

Oscar winning actress Kate Winslet will receive the HOLLYWOOD FILM AWARDS for her work in the Woody Allen film, Wonder Wheel, as a beleaguered wife to a middle-aged carousel operator in the 1950's on Coney Island, and Oscar nominated Jake Gyllenhall will receive the Hollywood Actor Award for his riveting and inspiring performance as Boston marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman in David Gordon Green's Stronger.

Carnivals and circuses played to packed audiences before World War ! and the depression, and in their enchanting story a young orphan named Lilli travels from hr past home when her father dies to search for her future, 'where everyone knows her name,' and of course, true love.

In 1978, I went with neighbors to the local movie theater to see the film adaptation of Grease. That was the first time I had ever gone to the movies without my parents. It was also the first time I had ever looked around the theater to make sure that the other people understood that we were seeing something extraordinary. It turned out that I was right that day in my 6-year-old assessment of Grease, at least if the fact that it went on to become one of the highest grossing musical films of all time is any indication. So when I see that there's a production of the stage musical coming to a theater near me, I always feel giddy. Unfortunately, I rarely leave a production having retained that delicious feeling of giddiness because it turns out once I get there that Danny Zuko isn't being played by John Travolta and Sandy isn't Olivia Newton John. But Serenbe Playhouse, under the direction of the oh-so-talented Brian Clowdus, with their gift for inventive, site-specific staging and their knack for finding the perfect cast, made me forget all about the Danny and Sandy of my childhood and left me with an acute awareness of the fact that Grease is still the word.

Roberta Peters, one of the most prominent American singers to achieve lasting fame and success in opera, has passed away at the age of 86.  Peters is noted for her 35-year association with the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York, among the longest such associations between a singer and a company in opera. She was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1998.
