What makes a Broadway theatre? Technically any venue with 500 seats or more, located along Broadway in New York City's Theatre District is a Broadway theatre, and the art that is produced in these special places is widely considered the highest form of theatrical entertainment in the world. Today, forty-one theatres are technically Broadway houses, each with their own rich history. Fawn James (director of Soho Estates) today announced the launch of the Boulevard Theatre in the heart of Soho in Walker's Court. The revived venue is located on the site where her grandfather Paul Raymond opened the original Boulevard Theatre.

Westport Country Playhouse will present a Script in Hand playreading of the romantic thriller, "Tricks of the Trade," on Monday, March 25, at 7 p.m.  Written by the late Sidney Michaels, who lived in Westport, Connecticut, the reading will be directed by Anne Keefe, Playhouse associate artist and curator of the playreading series. Tickets are $20 each. 

The Guthrie Theater (Joseph Haj, artistic director) today announced the nine productions of its 2019 2020 subscription season: Tennessee Williams' classic family drama The Glass Menagerie; Shakespeare's rollicking comedy Twelfth Night; an adaptation of Emma based on the Jane Austen novel; and Kander and Ebb's musical Cabaret will grace the Guthrie's signature Wurtele Thrust Stage while the McGuire Proscenium Stage's lineup will include Robert Harling's female-driven comedy Steel Magnolias; the regional premiere of Noura, Heather Raffo's complex tale of identity; Anne Bogart's acclaimed production of Euripides' The Bacchae; Karen Zacar as' comedic telenovela Destiny of Desire; and Lynn Nottage's Pulitzer Prize-winning Sweat.

Ford's Theatre Director Paul R. Tetreault today announced the upcoming 2019-2020 theatrical season will include August Wilson's Fences, directed by Timothy Douglas and starring Craig Wallace and Erika Rose; Silent Sky, an inspiring drama about trail-blazing female astronomers, directed by Seema Sueko; the classic musical comedy Guys and Dolls, directed by Peter Flynn; and A Christmas Carol featuring Craig Wallace reprising the role of Ebenezer Scrooge.

Okay, this week, I only have to throw out two CDs, but it hurts! I'll never forget May 31, 1992--the 46th Annual Tony Awards. I had just turned 16 and was eagerly tuning in to absorb the Broadway of it all. I didn't really know much about any of the shows, other than that friends and family in New York had flipped for Guys And Dolls and that my parents had loved an earlier incarnation of Jelly's Last Jam when it played the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. Glenn Close was hosting and Patti LuPone was presenting and I was not moving from my seat on the couch until I had a ranked list of the shows I wanted to see when I got to New York to visit my grandparents for Thanksgiving.

Berkeley Repertory Theatre today announced that over $2,500 was raised via the cabaret benefit Paradise for Paradise created by company members of the world premiere musical Paradise Square. The idea for the fundraiser came from the performers' desire to pay forward the sense of togetherness and community depicted in the story of Paradise Square to Paradise, California, a town that was affected by the Camp Fire.

Oversoul Theatre Collective is celebrating it's 25th year as a theater company by becoming active in the local theater scene after seven year hiatus from production. Formed in Mashpee by a small group of native (Wampanoag, Nipmuc, Mohawk, and Siponi) and Black actors, with the motto 'Life's A Stage, Arts for All!', the company went on to introduce Mashpee's first youth theater workshop as well as monthly coffeehouse presentations of theater, comedy and music, and full productions of plays.

The Case Western Reserve University/Cleveland Play House MFA Acting Program is proud to present Noel Coward's classic comedy Hay Fever. This madcap play about a weekend with the eccentric Bliss family will star the MFA Class of 2020 and a guest performer.  Director Jerrold Scott's production will take the audience back to the 1920's and remind them of the joy of life and fear of boredom. The show will run from February 27th-March 9th in Helen Theatre at Playhouse Square.

At Cafe Carlyle, she'll perform favorites from the Great American Songbook, plus a few of her Supreme hits showcasing her legendary smoky voice, as well as share stories from her iconic career. During the intimate set, Wilson will enchant the audience with classic, easy-listening tunes, giving them the chance to witness a diva in her prime.

Teresa Fischer has long wanted to sing this songbook and now is the perfect moment as the richness of her own career helps her to understand these songs in a way that the inimitable Rosemary Clooney did and as only Teresa can today.
