Singer Katini to Release Debut Album at NeueHouse Madison Square Concert

Jazz singer and recording artist, Katini Yamaoka, will release her debut album Gone on OneTrickDog*Records in a showcase performance at NeueHouse on November 3.  Born in Tokyo to West African and Japanese parents, and raised in the Far East, Katini has drawn on her diverse cultural roots to create a distinctly modern sound that combines the high-tech urban edginess of J-music with the soulful melodic and poly-rhythmic traditions of classical jazz.  Her years in Japan have led to a love of Coltrane and a fascination with the intimacy and the lived experience of improvisation.  Gone effortlessly blends classical and modern urban styles, exploring the blurring of musical boundaries that is essential to contemporary jazz.  Within this genre, Katini describes her style as “BGI” – brown girl iconic.   (more...)

Local director/actor Christie Vela returns to direct for the company after making her acting debut for Second Thought last summer in A Kid Like Jake. The Artistic Home will follow up its highly acclaimed and Jeff recommended production of By the Bog of Cats - a contemporary Irish take on Medea - with a much cheerier updating of a classic. Their summer production for 2017 will be David Ives' comedy in verse, The School for Lies. As Ives did with The Liar, his 'translaptation' of Corneille's Le Menteur, he honors the French 17th Century practice of writing in verse, but uses contemporary language even as he maintains the Moliere play's original setting of Paris in 1666. Singin' All Night tells the story of an autistic African American teenager who has been accused of a horrific crime. Two young attorneys are broke, desperate and take his impossible case. But everything changes when they realize he can communicate through music. Join us for the WORLD PREMIERE reading/ workshop presentation of Singin' All Night written by Artistic Director Kirk Gostkowski. Currently in previews, David Rabe's IN THE Boom Boom Room is set to open Off-Broadway tomorrow evening (Thursday) at American Theatre of Actors, 314 West 54 Street (just west of Eighth Ave.) Playwright David Rabe attended rehearsals over the past few weeks, making tweaks to his script in the process for this 2017 incarnation of the rarely produced play. The cast features Pete Mattaliano, who also appeared in the play's world premiere at Villanova University in 1972. Joseph Papp subsequently presented IN THE Boom Boom Room on Broadway in 1973 starring Robert Loggia, Charles Durning and Madeline Kahn, and the following year at The Public with Christopher Lloyd and Ellen Greene.
