Roundabout Theatre Company will present the second season of The Refocus Project, its multi-year project to elevate and restore marginalized plays to the American canon. The final two readings will be The Harlem Hellfighters On A Latin Beat on Thursday, June 23 at 7pm, and El Corrido De California on Monday, June 27, 7pm.

BroadwayWorld is saddened to report that Black theater pioneer Shauneille Perry Ryder has died at age 92. Perry was an actress, playwright and educator who was one of the first Black women to direct plays Off Broadway, most notably for the New Federal Theater.

August Wilson’s Jitney, a play about Black taxi drivers in Seventies Pittsburgh, last opened in London in October 2001. Cloaked in the resonance of 9/11 and a nation still in shock, it walked away that year with the Olivier award for Best New Play. Two decades on, thoughts run to the Obama presidencies, Black Lives Matter and a world almost unimaginable when this play was written in 1979.

The full season will feature B.R.O.K.E.N code B.I.R.D switching, a world premiere play and an award recipient of the GRANTS FOR ARTS PROJECTS from the National Endowment for the Arts; Once, a Tony Award-winning musical; Songs For a New World, the first musical by a Tony Award winner; Dracula, a classic gothic tale of horrors; and Edward Albee's Seascape, a Pulitzer Prize-winning play. 

SDCF announces the host theatre for its 2022 Lloyd Richards New Futures Residency program: Actors Theatre of Louisville in Louisville, KY. When pianist – composer Randy Klein began Jazzheads, an independent record label based in NYC, in 1992, he had two label models he aspired to, A&M Records and GRP Records – “Premiere labels started by musicians, Herb Alpert; Larry Rosen and Dave Grusin. What I observed about each is that they released popular songs adored by the masses but also released inventive ground-breaking music as well. You know, they pushed the form forward!” says Klein.
