Today's subject was kind enough to give me an hour of his time in the balcony of the place he lived his theatre life for almost 40 years.  I'm sure there isn't a person here in DC who would argue that Howard Shalwitz was one of the most influential minds in the DC theatre community as the Artistic Director of Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company. Under Shalwitz, Woolly Mammoth produced some of the most thought provoking, wild, and sometimes shocking pieces of theatre this area has ever seen. Shalwitz stepped down in 2018 and the company is now run by Maria Manuela Goyanes. Mr. Shalwitz remains as Artistic Director Emeritus.

The Cleveland Institute of Music announced yesterday that acclaimed conductor, composer and educator Michael Tilson Thomas will be awarded an honorary doctorate at the school's 95th Commencement Ceremony in Kulas Hall on Saturday, May 16 at 10am EDT. Attendance is by invitation only, but a live stream will be available via cim.edu. Yesterday's announcement was given at a special MTT-led rehearsal of the CIM Orchestra at Severance Hall, home of The Cleveland Orchestra, which MTT also conducts February 20-23.

This fall, Craft Recordings will reissue three titles fromSocial Distortion's independent catalog on vinyl. Set for a September 27th release, the LPs include the band's 1983 debut, Mommy's Little Monster, their 2004 studio album, Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll, and 1995's Mainliner (Wreckage From the Past), which compiles early singles and rare B-sides. Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at Miami Dade College (MDC) will inaugurate the new exhibition, Where the Oceans Meet, with a panel discussion and experimental vocal performance by Andros Zins-Browne on Sunday, May 26. The panel discussion with two artists in the exhibition--Zins-Browne and Daniel Boyd-and two of its curators-Asad Raza and Rina Carvajal-will be held at 3 p.m., followed by Zins-Browne's The Chaos Opera at 4 p.m.

BroadwayHD, the premier streaming platform for live theater, wants viewers to come and meet those dancing feet, when it debuts 42nd Street on the service on May 15th. A captivating filmed edition of the critically-acclaimed recent West End production of 42nd Street, BroadwayHD filmed the show specifically for the streaming service with the late, great theater producing and directing visionary Mark Bramble collaborating closely with Ross MacGibbon, who directed the filmed version. Bramble co-wrote the book for the original 1981 Broadway production that has been widely credited with helping revitalize the Great White Way in the early 80s. The BroadwayHD production of 42nd Street, which he helped edit for screen, marks one of Bramble's last theater projects before passing away earlier this year.

Playwrights Horizons (Artistic Director Tim Sanford, Managing Director Leslie Marcus) will, from today, November 12, through Thursday, November 15, accept entries for the Live for Five online lottery, giving out $5 tickets to the New York premiere production of Noura, from 9 Parts of Desire playwright and actor Heather Raffo and director Joanna Settle. The Washington Post deemed this "epic-feeling, nearly searing portrait of a woman torn between cultures and family" the "best premiere of the Women's Voices Theater Festival" when it made its world premiere in Washington, D.C. earlier this year. Produced in association with Shakespeare Theatre Company, it will be performed at Playwrights Horizons from November 27 to December 30. Playwrights Horizons created Live for Five in 2007 as part of their Arts Access program to reach out to those who may not be able to afford the cost of a full-price theater ticket. Since its inception, over 3,000 theatergoers have been able to attend the theater thanks to the initiative.

One of the biggest hits in theatrical history, CATS will come to Shea's Buffalo Theatre from February 5 to 10, 2019 as part of a multi-season North American tour. Today, in celebration of National Cat Day, producers announced casting for the North American tour of the first ever Broadway revival of CATS. The multi-year tour will launch at Providence Performing Arts Center on January 22, 2019 and play 24 cities in its first season.

The Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art (NEHMA) at Utah State University (USU) is presenting Collecting on the Edge, a ground-breaking, two-part exhibition showcasing its exceptional collection that focuses on the history of art west of the Mississippi River since 1920. Featuring work by 172 artists, Collecting on the Edge and the publication that accompanies it provide a compelling look at NEHMA's collection and the curatorial rigor and connoisseurship evident in its development. 

In support of their forthcoming new album, British music legends Soft Machine will embark on their first North American tour since 1974 in October 2018, followed by the second North-American leg of the tour in January/February 2019. In concert, their set list will include material from all parts of the band's repertoire from 1970 onwards, but this is emphatically not a nostalgia act resting on its laurels. Last weekend Soft Machine played their first two shows in North America since 1974 (it was in 1974 they toured USA and Canada during the Bundles/Allan Holdsworth era). Both shows, at the Montreal Jazz Festival and Quebec City, were exceptionally well received by the enthusiastic audience and local press.

Pittsburgh CLO's THE FULL MONTY will take it all off at the Benedum Center this summer July 6 - 15. With a book written by Terrence McNally (Ragtime) and the music/ lyric talents of David Yazbek (The Band's Visit, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Women On The Verge of a Nervous Breakdown), this duo cooks up an aggressive crowd-pleaser that is both highly-entertaining and charmingly uplifting.

On Monday, May 14, 2018, Third Street Music School Settlement (Third Street), the nation's longest running community school, will honor Grammy Award-winning Singer and Songwriter Rosanne Cash, Tony and Oscar Award-winner Joel Grey, and long-time Board Member and Award-winning Architect Byron Bell at its Annual Spring Gala.
