As both a celebration of the Washington National Opera and a culmination of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts' Leonard Bernstein at 100 celebration, last weekend's Opera Gala definitely found success. While the evening had its share of disappointments (Titus Burgess of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt fame fell ill and was unable to perform; Patti LuPone, the top-billed artist of the evening, performed only two fairly short numbers) there was an undeniable electricity to the night. Previously, the WNO held an annual ball which, according to Kennedy Center Chairman David Rubenstein, included neither opera nor a ball. Switching the format to one with a formal gala reception, an opera-filled performance, and elegant dinners hosted by Ambassadors and foreign dignitaries proved the Kennedy Center can still pull off some new tricks.

His brilliant assistant Rose, (played by Seattle actress LARA McLEOD, who is also a member of popular a capella group A Shot in the Dark), comes up with a plan that takes them from fast-paced NYC to Sweet Apple, Ohioa??a town just as provincial as it's name suggests. Turing up to throw a wrench in things is Albert's mother Mae, (recently retired professor of the theatre arts DIANA TROTTER), and a saucy new secretary named Gloria (played by recent UW alum JESSICA LORENZ). Can Sweet Apple handle the bright lights of mega stardom coming their way? Celebrity, sincerity, gender, and generations collide in this beautifully scored show that includes the songs "Kids," "Spanish Rose," and "Put on A Happy Face."

Against a backdrop of bitter intolerance and terrible violence in the Indian state of Assam in the 1980's, filmmaker Bidyut Kotoky's semi-autobiographical tale, Rainbow Fields (Xhoixobote Dhemalite), is told through the eyes of children impacted by events they don't fully understand. The children's playtime games lead to an incident that changes them forever, and years later as adults they must grapple with coming to terms with what happened, and with themselves. First rate acting, notably by Victor Banerjee (A Passage to India) and by the child actors, plus the rich cinematography, add to the depth of the film. For those who are familiar with, and especially for those who are unfamiliar with, this period of Indian history, this arresting film is a must-see.
