While both are set against some bleak backdrops, they feature some larger-than-life characters that make them ripe for theatrical presentation.

Old Meets New As Tafelmusik Unveils 2019/20 Season

Today Music Director Elisa Citterio unveiled Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra's 2019/20 season, which highlights the freshness and vigour at the heart of everything Tafelmusik undertakes. Old meets new in unprecedented ways, including Tafelmusik's first-ever foray into the music of the late Romantic composer Tchaikovsky, a new multimedia program by Alison Mackay, the return of Vesuvius Ensemble, six world premieres by living composers, and Tafelmusik premieres of Lotti's Missa Sapientiae and of Citterio's own orchestral arrangement of Bach's Goldberg Variations. Citterio's debut Tafelmusik recording, Vivaldi con amore, will be released in September 2019, and a live recording of A Handel Celebration takes place at Koerner Hall in May 2020. In November 2019 Tafelmusik returns to Europe for the first time in a decade, with soprano Karina Gauvin, and the critically acclaimed Safe Haven multimedia program will travel across Ontario in 2020.

That same community has been mourning the unimaginable, heartbreaking loss of Heck Seibert since April 13 when she died after being struck by a car while walking her dog in her Ann Arbor neighborhood. She would have been 62 on May 5.

The Artistic Home Ensemble will present the Chicago premiere of Lauren Gunderson's ADA AND THE ENGINE as the final entry in its three-play 2018-19 season, according to company Artistic Director Kathy Scambiatterra, who announced the season today. The 36-year-old Gunderson was the most-produced playwright in America during 2017, according to American Theatre Magazine.

Word for Word's first production of their 25th Anniversary Season is Lucia Berlin:Stories running February 14-March 11, in the Z Below Theater in San Francisco. Lucia Berlin:Stories opens with press performances February 17 & 18, Saturday 8 PM and Sunday 3 PM  (previews Feb. 14 - 16). The stories are from Lucia Berlin's posthumously published, critically acclaimed, A Manual for Cleaning Women featuring the stories 'Her First Detox', 'Emergency Room Notebook 1977', 'Unmanageable', '502' and 'Here It Is Saturday'. Directed by Nancy Shelby and JoAnne Winter, Lucia Berlin:Stories is set to an evocative jazz score by Marcus Shelby, and illuminated with vibrant projections by Naomie Kremer. Author Lydia Davis in The New Yorker described Berlin's work: 'Lucia Berlin's stories are electric, they buzz and crackle as the live wires touch....This is exhilarating writing' On Sunday, February 25,following the 3PM performance: Lucia's Sons, a post-show talk with Jeff Berlin and David Berlin in conversation with the audience and remarking about the performances, stories, and their life with their mother Lucia Berlin.
