The Philly POPS announced its 40th Anniversary 2018-19 concert season today. Subscriptions for this celebratory 40th Anniversary Season go on sale at 10 a.m. Moe Septee founded the POPS in November 1979 with a concert at the Academy of Music. The Mingus Dynasty Septet plays often at the Jazz Standard in New York City, one of the top jazz clubs in the country. La Jolla's Athenaeum Library brought them to San Diego for two performances that included a tribute to Charles Mingus's Tijuana Moods album, originally recorded in 1957 and finally released in 1962. The septet, appropriately enough, played first in Tijuana. The following night I was at the TSRI Auditorium near the UCSD campus to see a repeat performance of the all-Mingus program.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's five-week holiday engagement at New York City Center continues this week with a new production of Tony Award-winning choreographer Twyla Tharp's The Golden Sectionon Wednesday, December 6. The critically-acclaimed work pushes the limits of human physicality as Ailey dancers take on Tharp's daring, driving choreography with breathtaking leaps and finely-honed partnering. Applauded by The New York Times for his leading role in the work, Clifton Brown the virtuoso Ailey dancer who recently returned to the company rises to Ms. Tharp's challenges as if he's been released, and his absorption becomes transporting.

The first North American tour of the Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of THE COLOR PURPLE begins tonight, October 7, 2017 in Schenectady, New York at Proctors. The tour will have its official opening October 17, 2017 in Baltimore, Maryland at The Hippodrome Theatre.
