Catherine Russell and Her Sextet, Pete Zimmer, Jay Leonhart Quintet and Special Guests, Tribute to Marlene VerPlanck, and more lead the coming week at Birdland!

Birdland will kick-off their great week of programming with the following acts:

February 12 (Monday) at 7:00PM

Kooman & Dimond

The Broadway at Birdland concert series is proud to announce that songwriters Michael Kooman and Christopher Dimond, along with a cast of exciting guest stars, will bring "The Crowd Goes Mild" to the historic stage. Fresh off of the premieres of their latest projects, the new musical Romantics Anonymous (Shakespeare's Globe) and the animated Disney TV series "Vampirina," Michael Kooman and Christopher Dimond welcome a cast of Broadway stars to share a wide array of selections from their songbook.

February 12 (Monday) at 9:30PM

Jim Caruso's Cast Party

Jim Caruso's Cast Party is a wildly popular weekly soiree that brings a sprinkling of Broadway glitz and urbane wit to the legendary Birdland in New York City every Monday night. It's a cool cabaret night-out enlivened by a hilariously impromptu variety show. Showbiz superstars, backed by Steve Doyle on bass, Billy Stritch on piano and Daniel Glass on drums, hit the stage alongside up-and-comers, serving up jaw-dropping music and general razzle-dazzle.

Catherine Russell and Her Sextet

Catherine Russell dazzles her audiences with familiar favorites and forgotten treasures alike. Russell excelled as a backup singer and multi-instrumentalist with David Bowie, Steely Dan, Cyndi Lauper, and Paul Simon before launching a remarkable solo career featuring Grammy award winning and chart topping recordings. With her sixth album, Harlem On My Mind, a 2016 release on Jazz Village, Catherine journeys to the blue heart of the great African American song- book, as befits this vibrant daughter of jazz and blues royalty. Inspired by her mother, pioneering jazz musician Carline Ray, as well as her father, long-time Louis Armstrong bandleader Luis Russell, Catherine swings forth with soulful interpretations: fresh, contemporary, fun, and true to her roots.

David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band

Inspired by the noble jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton and their colleagues, David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band breathes life and passion into America's own great art form. Now in its 14th year of residency at Birdland, the weekly post-workday engagement is the city's best musical bargain! Tuba player David Ostwald leads a rotating lineup that features talents such as clarinetist Anat Cohen, trombonist/vocalist Wycliffe Gordon, pianist Ehud Asherie, drummer Marion Felder and more!

February 15 (Thursday) at 6:00PM

Jay Leonhart Quintet and Special Guests, Tribute to Marlene VerPlanck

Longtime Marlene VerPlanck bassist and collaborator Jay Leonhart leads a tribute featuring many of her regular bandmates and special guests. Newark native Marlene VerPlanck was a jazz and pop vocalist whose body of work centered on big band jazz, the American songbook, and cabaret. VerPlanck was a prolific studio vocalist for jingles, which included singing an arrangement of the 1930s Campbell's Soup "M'm M'm Good" song. The Jay Leonhart Quintet features Leonhart on bass and vocals, Warren Vaché Jr. on horns, Don Braden on saxophone, Russ Kassoff on keys and Ron Vincent on drums.

February 16 (Friday) at 5:15PM

The Birdland Big Band

Founded by drummer and musical director Tommy Igoe, the Birdland Big Band features the finest musicians in New York! Celebrating 10 years at the club, the BBB roars into action every Friday, playing the finest Jazz, Latin and Brazilian music from the world's best arrangers. After work or before a show, drinks or a great dinner, come hear one of the world's best drummers driving the hardest swinging band in New York. Eric Comstock

Singer/pianist Eric Comstock has been called "a song's best friend," and the jazz and pop songbooks are in great hands when he is onstage at Birdland. Whether the song is by Rodgers and Hart or Ellington and Strayhorn, Paul Simon or Bob Dylan, you'll hear the lyric as if for the first time. Joining Eric will be eminent bassist/composer Sean Smith -- in all, a perfect winter Saturday supper!

February 18 (Sunday) at 6:00PM

Pete Zimmer

Pete Zimmer has made his mark nationally and internationally as a versatile and articulate drummer, bandleader, sideman, composer, educator, and record label entrepreneur. Since 2004, Pete Zimmer released five (5) critically acclaimed albums as a leader on his own record label, Tippin' Records. The albums showcase both his constant swing on the drums and his skillful and melodic compositions. His composition, "Time That Once Was," a moving ballad recorded on his first album Common Man, was recently licensed to Sony Pictures Television where it was featured in the opening scene of the series they produce "Masters of Sex", with aired on Showtime.

February 18 (Sunday) at 9PM & 11PM

The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra

Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill -- leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz" (NY Times) -- was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte.

Named for alto saxophonist and jazz pioneer Charlie "Bird" Parker who dubbed it "The Jazz Corner of the World," Birdland opened on December 15th 1949. For 60 years it has been home to jazz legends, from Parker, John Coltrane Duke Ellington and Count Basie to Oscar Peterson, Hank Jones, Diana Krall and everyone in between.
