Shiner Announces U.S. Tour Dates

Last week Kansas City's Shiner announced their return by way of the May 8 release of new album Schadenfreude. Today they are happy to announce a U.S. tour in support of the album. The dates kick of May 21 at Chicago's Lincoln Hall and conclude at the Double Wide in Dallas on July 27. Along the way they will also play Brooklyn, Seattle and Los Angeles as well as a hometown show at Kansas City's Record Bar on June 5. All dates are below.

ASCAP Foundation Announces 2020 Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers

The ASCAP Foundation has announced the recipients of the 2020 Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Awards. The program was established in 2002 to encourage young gifted jazz composers up to the age of 30. It carries the name of the great trumpeter and ASCAP member Herb Alpert in recognition of The Herb Alpert Foundation's multi-year financial commitment to the program. The recipients, who receive cash awards, range in age from 17 to 29 and are selected through a juried national competition. 

PANCHAKSHARA: VIKKU VINAYAKRAM & 3 GENERATIONS is Coming to Brooklyn

Three generations of virtuosic musicians come together to provide rhythmic fireworks in this celebration of South Indian percussion. The group is led by the legendary Vikku Vinayakram, who has popularized the ghatam (clay pot) over his long career, was a founding member of the acclaimed Shakti ensemble with John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain, and received India's most prestigious awards and titles. He is joined by his two sons, V. Selvaganesh (hybrid drum kit), a leading musician in the world of rhythm who was a member of Remember Shakti, and Umashankar (ghatam), who is known for his meteoric rise in the classical Carnatic music field; his grandson, the dynamic Swaminathan Selvaganesh (kanjira - small frame drum, konakkol - vocal percussion), who has been lauded as one of the top kanjira players of his generation; and A. Ganesan (morsing - jaw harp), who has performed in ensembles with Zakir Hussain and toured with Vikku throughout the world.

Brooklyn's AOP To Select Composers, Librettists For Two Years Of Free Training In The Fundamentals Of Opera

American Opera Projects (AOP) announces the return of its popular Composers & the Voice program for its 2019-21 seasons. Created and led by Composers & the Voice Artistic Director Steven Osgood, six composers and up to three librettists will be selected for two-year fellowships to learn the fundamentals of writing for the voice and opera stage. Workshop sessions with professional opera singers, mentors, and instructors are held at AOP's home base in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Applications and complete information will be available beginning March 18 at www.aopopera.org/composers_voice. The deadline for applications is April 26 with fellowships announced by July 16.

Broken Social Scene to Perform at Arts & Crafts SXSW Showcase

It's been a busy start to 2019 for Broken Social Scene. The collective released their new EP, Let's Try The After Vol. 1 in February and soon after announced a series of residencies in Toronto, New York, Montreal, Los Angeles and Seattle. Today, they share a full slate of SXSW shows, including a very special performance of their 2002 classic, You Forgot It In People, performed in its entirety at the Arts & Crafts showcase.

Goodman Theatre Announces 2018/2019 Playwrights Unit

Goodman Theatre's commitment to new works and emerging artists continues in its 2018/2019 Season. Today, the Goodman named four Chicago-based writers to its Playwrights Unit-Georgette Kelly, whose play Ballast was featured on The Kilroys List and received the Craig Noel Award for Outstanding New Play; Dianne Nora, a playwright, dramaturg, theater scholar and comedy writer who works in Chicago, Brooklyn and Dublin; Marisela Treviño Orta, semifinalist for the 2018 O'Neill Theater Center National Playwrights Conference and 2019 Kendeda Finalist (Alliance Theatre); and Stacey Rose, whose work has been presented at New York University Tisch School of the Arts, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, National Black Theatre and more. The Playwrights Unit, in partnership with Chicago Dramatists, meets bi-monthly to discuss their commissioned plays-in-progress with the Goodman's artistic team. The residency culminates in a public staged reading of each new play in Summer 2019.

With the assistance of a generous grant from the Tow Foundation, the Department of Theater, in conjunction with the MFA Playwriting Program, headed by co-coordinators Mac Wellman and Erin Courtney, will present the annual Weasel Festival, hosted by The Public Theater (August 17-24). This festival of new works, previously produced by the playwrights, will feature performances of full length plays written by Kate Dakota Kremer, Rachel Kauder Nalebuff, Jerry Lieblich, and April Ranger all of whom are recent graduates of the MFA Playwrighting Program at Brooklyn College.

Tuesday Smillie Wins Rose Art Museum Award

The Rose Art Museum has named Brooklyn-based, Boston-born artist Tuesday Smillie as the recipient of the 2018-2019 Ruth Ann and Nathan Perlmutter Artist-in-Residence Award. In conjunction with her Perlmutter residency, the Rose will host Smillie's first solo museum exhibition. Organized by Assistant Curator Caitlin Julia Rubin, Tuesday Smillie: To build another world will be on view September 7 through December 2, 2018.

Breakthrough artist Anne-Marie released a fun-loving backstage video for her song “2002” shot with co-writer and long-time friend, Ed Sheeran, who trades vocals with Anne-Marie and plays acoustic guitar in the clip. Rolling Stone put “2002” – a song Anne-Marie wrote with Ed Sheeran - on their “The Playlist,” praising it as “peak, perfect early-Aughts nostalgia.” Peopleconcurred, hailing the song as “a nostalgia-fueled millennial dream.”  Check out the video below!

New York Classical Theatre's ROMEO AND JULIET Moves To Rockefeller Park/Battery Park City For 'Take A Seat' Week

After a successful run in Central Park, playing to over 4,000 people, performances resume on Wednesday, June 27 in Rockefeller Park/Battery Park City for New York Classical Theatre's critically acclaimed production of Romeo and Juliet, directed by the company's Founding Artistic Director Stephen Burdman. The production will play this week through June 30, before continuing on to The Battery, Carl Schurz Park, and Brooklyn Bridge Park for performances through July 29. There is no ticketing, and all performances are free and open to the public. Performance schedule can be found at newyorkclassical.org.

New York Classical Theatre Celebrates 19th Anniversary with ROMEO AND JULIET

New York Classical Theatre (Stephen Burdman, Artistic Director), New York City's only all-free professional Off-Broadway theatre company, is pleased to announce a new production of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to celebrate its 19th Anniversary Season. The production, directed by Mr. Burdman, is the company's first staging of Shakespeare's tale of star-crossed lovers, and will be presented in five New York City parks - Central Park, Rockefeller Park/Battery Park City, The Battery, Carl Schurz Park and Brooklyn Bridge Park - with performances from June 5 through July 29 at 7:00 PM. There is no ticketing, and all performances are free and open to the public. New York Classical Theatre also invites audiences to experience unique behind-the-scenes access to open rehearsals on selected dates for each of the five park stagings.
