An early American giant of science is the subject of her latest multi-media spectacle, 'The Transfiguration of Benjamin Banneker.' It celebrates the life of the free black man who, living in Maryland from 1731 to 1806, became one of his era's most outstanding engineers and astronomers. La MaMa will present the world premiere of the piece January 23 to February 2 in its Ellen Stewart Theatre, at 66 East Fourth Street.

The French Institute Alliance Fran aise (FIAF), New York's premier French cultural and language center, today announced the 2019 Crossing the Line Festival, featuring 11 performances and a gallery exhibition from a geographically, generationally, and artistically diverse group of artists whose work transcends genres and boundaries. All performances are world, US, or New York premieres; they are united by their convention-breaking fearlessness as they confront topics from social injustice to personal demons. Many of the performances pay homage to legendary artists of our time and previous eras, while the theme of migration and its transformational effects on identity informs several others. On August 8th, 2014, THE IMBIBLE: A SPIRITED HISTORY OF DRINKING opened at the New York International Fringe Festival for what was supposed to be a five-performance run. After sold-out FringeNYC and Fringe Encore engagements, a front-page feature in the Arts section of The New York Times, and three hit sequels, the production is now in an open run at New World Stages.

It's time to strike up the band for the 7th annual concert by the McCallum Theatre Concert Band, with conductor and McCallum Theatre President & CEO Mitch Gershenfeld, on Sunday, March 24, at 3:00pm. Highlights of this year's concert will be a performance of the beloved "Carnival of the Animals" by Saint-Saens featuring pianist Jeffrey Siegel and a new text written and performed by David Gonzalez, and special guest appearances by Gavin MacLeod (narrator) and former TEN Tenor Chad Hilligus (guest vocalist). Vinitaly International in collaboration with Veronafiere and the support of ICE - Italian Trade Agency are working on the finishing touches of the Los Angeles edition of the VIA Italian Wine Ambassador certification course next February and enrollment is still open. The re-formatted, tasting-intensive Italian wine course is taught by VIA Faculty Sarah Heller MW and Henry Davar, both experienced professionals and educators. Sector professionals who want to be challenged and take an in-depth survey of Italian wines and their native grape varieties are welcome to submit their candidacy for this rewarding course. The course will expose candidates to the theory behind Italian wine with lectures on grape varieties, styles, and terroirs. Both guided tastings and self-guided tasting labs will also be a huge component of the curriculum, allowing students to practice tasting in preparation for the final exam.

Multi-GRAMMY Award-winning composer/pianist/educator Arturo O'Farrill and the non-profit The Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) are thrilled to announce NYC's premier Afrobeat concert of 2019, ALJO + AFROBEAT = FELA!, featuring O'Farrill and his 18-piece Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (ALJO) alongside Tony Award-Nominated Sahr Ngaujah (lead actor in the Tony-winning Broadway musical, Fela!). Today's singular forbearers of the Afrobeat genre take to the stage with O'Farrill to debut big band jazz arrangements of Fela Anikulapo Kuti's classic works as well as innovative collaborations with special guest artists Wunmi (vocals), Tosin Aribisala (drums/vocals), Bryan Vargas (guitar), and DJ Ausar. Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Fela!'s Broadway premiere in 2009, ALJO + AFROBEAT = FELA! will be presented in the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre @ Symphony Space on January 25 & 26, 2019. A Relaxed Performance of the National Theatre's multi award-winning production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time will take place at the Piccadilly Theatre on Saturday 6 April at 2.30 pm, to coincide with World Autism Awareness Week.

Production has officially wrapped in Alabama on the coming-of-age teen comedy “This is the Year” starring breakout actor Lorenzo Henrie (“Fear the Walking Dead”) and Gregg Sulkin (Marvel's “Runaways,” “Faking It”). David Henrie (“Wizards of Waverly Place,” “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2”) is directing the film and wrote the screenplay with Bug Hall, Pepe Portillo and Sienna Aquilinni.

The National Theatre announces today that The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, adapted by Simon Stephens from the novel by Mark Haddon, and directed by Marianne Elliott (War Horse, Angels in America, Company) will return to the West End in November 2018 for a limited season. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time begins previews at the Piccadilly Theatre on 29 November, with an opening night on 11 December.

The Blind Boys of Alabama have the rare distinction of being recognized around the world as both living legends and modern-day innovators. They are not just gospel singers borrowing from old traditions; the group helped to define those traditions in 20th century and almost single-handedly created a new gospel sound for the 21st.
