An early American giant of science is the subject of her latest multi-media spectacle, 'The Transfiguration of Benjamin Banneker.' It celebrates the life of the free black man who, living in Maryland from 1731 to 1806, became one of his era's most outstanding engineers and astronomers. La MaMa will present the world premiere of the piece January 23 to February 2 in its Ellen Stewart Theatre, at 66 East Fourth Street.

The French Institute Alliance Fran aise (FIAF), New York's premier French cultural and language center, today announced the 2019 Crossing the Line Festival, featuring 11 performances and a gallery exhibition from a geographically, generationally, and artistically diverse group of artists whose work transcends genres and boundaries. All performances are world, US, or New York premieres; they are united by their convention-breaking fearlessness as they confront topics from social injustice to personal demons. Many of the performances pay homage to legendary artists of our time and previous eras, while the theme of migration and its transformational effects on identity informs several others. Vinitaly International in collaboration with Veronafiere and the support of ICE - Italian Trade Agency are working on the finishing touches of the Los Angeles edition of the VIA Italian Wine Ambassador certification course next February and enrollment is still open. The re-formatted, tasting-intensive Italian wine course is taught by VIA Faculty Sarah Heller MW and Henry Davar, both experienced professionals and educators. Sector professionals who want to be challenged and take an in-depth survey of Italian wines and their native grape varieties are welcome to submit their candidacy for this rewarding course. The course will expose candidates to the theory behind Italian wine with lectures on grape varieties, styles, and terroirs. Both guided tastings and self-guided tasting labs will also be a huge component of the curriculum, allowing students to practice tasting in preparation for the final exam.
