Review: LIES, SPELLS & OLD WIVES TALES at Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe

In a jubilant tribute to the influential women in our lives - our Mothers, Grandmothers, and Aunties - WBTT proudly introduces a fresh production by its very own founder and creative visionary, Nate Jacobs. Alongside his brother Michael, Nate has crafted an engaging and lively play comprising vignettes that illuminate the timeless life lessons passed down through generations. The witty and whimsical portrayal of wedding cake myths, everyday adages, and quirky mottos sheds light on the humorous aspects of these age-old tales. Yet, beneath the surface, this show weaves a vibrant tapestry of shared truths delivered through a delightful fusion of dance, music, and contagious laughter.

On a modest stage, the spotlight shifts to the exceptional work of Costume Designer Suwatana Pla Rockland. Her creations truly steal the show with a vibrant palette that demands attention and admiration. The costumes play a vital role in weaving together the narratives of ancestors, showcasing a tapestry of African fabrics rich in cultural, social, and political symbolism. Each intricate pattern and bold color choice whispers stories of heritage, tradition, and societal standing.

In a show filled with clever lines and playful rhymes, the lessons come alive with catchy tunes like "I love my Men," performed with flair by the talented Sieglinda Fox, who stole the spotlight with her magnetism and rocking voice! Jazzmin Carson, with comedic mastery and bold facial expressions, guided the crowd with humor and sass, reminiscent of her previous role as Lutiebelle in "Purlie”.

LIES, SPELLS & OLD WIVES TALES is a delightful and entertaining theatrical performance suitable for audiences of all ages. The show offers a perfect blend of entertainment, insightful truths, and valuable life lessons. If you're looking for a memorable time, you can still grab tickets to the evening, or matinee shows scheduled until May 17th. Enjoy a magical experience full of laughter, wisdom, and wonder!
