King James
by Rajiv Joseph
June 25 – July 27, 2025 Sacramento Premiere
“King” LeBron James’s years playing in Cleveland bring promise, prosperity, and renewal to a city in desperate need of all three. His tenure also unites Shawn and Matt in an unlikely bond forged by fandom. Over twelve years, from LeBron’s rookie season to an NBA Championship, the men navigate their turbulent friendship through their shared love of basketball—and the endless amiable arguments that erupt from that love. A clever comedy, KING JAMES is an intimate exploration of the place that sports occupy in our lives and relationships.
“Joseph has created one of the funniest and most moving plays about friendship in years… Basketball fans will love Joseph’s insidery jokes, but even if you don’t follow the game all that much, KING JAMES is a must-see.” –THEATERMANIA
Capital Stage will present the Sacramento premiere of The Sound Inside by Adam Rapp as part of its 21st season. Directed by Michael Stevenson, the play explores the evolving relationship between a Yale professor and a gifted student.
Capital Stage is ending their 20th Anniversary season with nothing but net! Rajiv Joseph’s stellar take on friendship and fandom, King James, continues its run through this weekend. Michael Stevenson directs this Sacramento premiere, deftly guiding the dynamic duo of Ian C. Hopps and Tarig Elsiddig through the delicate hoops of brotherly love.
Summer theatre in Sacramento is something I look forward to with unbridled anticipated every year. Outdoor dining at a locally owned restaurant followed by a fabulous show downtown is one of my favorite ways to spend a summer evening. Luckily, we have no shortage of shows to choose from, and I’m going to share some of my favorite picks of the coming months.
