Distributed by 20th Century Fox, The Rocky Horror Picture Show debuted on August 14, 1975 starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick among others. After gaining notoriety in 1977 with movie audiences as a Midnight movie, it gained a cult following across the United States as film goers participated in the film, dressing up as characters, bringing in props from the movie and shouting out alternative lines during the show. The Rocky Horror Picture Show gained a substantial international following in the late 70s and early 80s, and is now regarded as one of the most-known and financially successful Midnight movies of all time. In 2005, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
