Some new plays start with a writer, a table, and a group of actors. At The Hatchery, new plays start with an imaginary dance. A red dress vision. An earworm melody. Or an irresistible beat. We celebrate and support new works centering movement and music through development workshops and a free one-day festival.
The Hatchery debuts on August 25, 2024, when two production teams open their doors to share performances of their plays-in-progress following a week of intensive work in the studio. Join us for new works and festivities including a catered happy hour, a moderated panel on creating Deaf theater, an all-bodies-welcome dance class, and more. All events are FREE, open to the public and ASL interpreted.
The Hatchery Full Schedule | Sunday, August 25
1:30pm - Doors open at The Judy
2:00pm - Performance of La Mariposa by Sofia Marks with Isabel McTighe (please reserve a FREE seat at https://bit.ly/la_mariposa)
La Mariposa is a solo devised work about a girl who has forgotten her name. In her bedroom, she howls folklorico vocals and dances bachata. At the borderlands, she cries for her deities.
3:30pm - All bodies welcome community dance class
4:30pm - Panel discussion: Creating Deaf Theater
5:30pm - Complimentary Happy Hour
7:00pm - Performance of WHY and HOW are Not in the Picture by Monique Holt (please reserve a FREE seat at https://bit.ly/how_why)
WHY and HOW is a multi-sensory experience for hearing and d/Deaf audiences performed entirely in American Sign Language. Competing voices struggle to construct meaning inside a Deaf Brain, resulting in an absurdist musical enhanced by projected captions, sound, and dynamic lighting elements.
Restaurant and parking information is not available for this location.
The Judy is at 1000 SW Broadway T-100, Portland, OR.
