Humble Materials to produce CALL OF THE WILDas part of Philadelphia Fringe festival on September 17, 18, 19 at 8pin Philly PACK garage theatre in South Philly.Rehearsals are underway for Philadelphias femme-centric theatre collective, Humble Materials, original production of CALL OF THE WILD. The show was conceived from a series of visuals surrounding wolves, the moon, and a utopian matriarchal/communal society much like a pack. The script was born from interviews with several local Philadelphia women, and the project is directed by Jessica Noel (Yellow Wallpaper, All Quiet On The Western Front, CASS), with production design by Kat Caro (Made of Paper film, Scarlet Letter, MEDEA).This year was a harrowing realization that we, as an American society, are getting things very wrong. Especially within our leadership. Weve worshipped at the altar of money and power for far too long, and the ones paying the price are future generationsour children, writer-director Jessica Noel says. We want to build a show that offers an opportunity to imagine a better way of living. We landed on the wolf metaphor because there is something primal about digging deep within ourselves to excavate our ancestral knowledge of how to live more harmoniously with each other and the planet.Production designer Kat Caro, known in Philadelphia for her unique uses of cardboard, is creating wolf masks and shadow puppets for the project. Shadows and masks are amongour earliesttools for storytelling so they were an exciting fit for this production.True to our company name, I like to use recognizableand sustainable materials in my work. Since this show is largely about reconnecting with nature, it feels particularlyapt to push back againstconsumerism and make ourpuppets and masks withwhat we have athand, and visually connect our world ofoverconsumption to a story about findingour truernatures, Caro says.Humble Materials is known for launching projects with titles from the classical Western canon, but true to the companys past work, CALL OF THE WILD is very different from Jack Londons 1903 adventure novel with the same title. Londons plot follows a sled dog on a survival journey. Our community expects us to flip classics on their heads, and thats exactly what were planning, says Noel. We did draw inspiration from Londons theme of surviving an inhospitable environment by listening to ones internal compass. Like Jack London, Humble Materials believes everything we need to forge a new way of living already exists within. We just have to listen to our hearts and our intuitionour instincts.CALL OF THE WILD written/directed by Jessica Noel. Production design/costume design by Kat Caro. Choreography and featured performances by Carolyn Breyer, Amy Henderson, Jessica Noel, Yasmin Roberti, and Lisa Vaccarelli. Script inspired by interviews from Kat Caro, Yasmin Roberti, Lisa Vaccarelli, Monica Flory, Carolyn Breyer and Amy Henderson.Lighting/Projections/Sound by John Noel, Singer Noel and Max HendersonSeptember 17, 18, 19 at 8PM at Philly PACK (233 Federal Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147)Tickets on sale August 1st at https://www.phillypack.org/pack-events/For press inquiries, please contact Jessica Noel at (979) 204-4229 or pennsportpack@gmail.com Visit Humble Materials on IG @humblematerials or http://phillypack.org/humble-materials
