The Orchard Project Announces 2018 New York City Greenhouse

The Orchard Project (Artistic Director, Ari Edelson) announced the eleven writers, composers, directors and companies for its 2018 New York City Greenhouse. In its first year, the Orchard Project NYC Greenhouse is a new NYC-based accelerator for directors, writers, composers and other generative artists to seed ambitious and unexpected work, form new relationships and develop a new generation of theater. For the Orchard Project, it aims to parlay the strength of support that has set the organization apart and transform it into a resource for its growing network of artists.

The Brick Theater, Inc. and Rosie DeSantis Present LETTERS IN THE DIRT

Immersive and surreal, LETTERS IN THE DIRT places its audience face-to-face with the insightful Aiyana Jones- a seven-year-old girl fatally shot by police in 2010 during a botched raid in Detroit, now a symbol within the Movement for Black Lives. Structured like a game-ritual, the show lands it audience in a mysterious purgatory the night after Aiyana's killing, where they are greeted by a chorus of black children, invited to play a game, and provided objects that were once a part of Aiyana's life. To "play," the audience must use their objects to guide her through her memories to an understanding of her death. Participants learn her favorite playground games, and dream aloud with her about if "we was all free." All while celebrating black imagination and vulnerability, LETTERS IN THE DIRT creates a vibrant, intimate audience experience personal to all who participate.

WHAT MAKES US FEEL GOOD Premieres At The Tank

What Makes Us Feel Good begins with a cow attempting to put the audience at ease. In reality, however, this is an actor looking for self validation. We cannot be certain how the audiences at The Tank will respond, but Johnny the Cow will most certainly ignore them. Especially once he has asked them a question. You see, he wants to get to the good stuff. A trauma involving his mother. A lifetime of self doubt. Forgiveness. Anyway, there's another actor on stage now. They are preparing to present an educational children's theatre show based on the life of murderer William Bradford Bishop. They are certain that it will be both marketing and compelling. The resulting performance is an amalgam of children's broadcast programming, live educational theatre, and William Bradford Bishop's violent acts in Bethesda, Maryland in 1976.
