The single also served as the title track to King’s debut LP with Stax. Released in August 1967, Born Under a Bad Sign compiled the above-mentioned singles, plus originals like “The Hunter,” (penned by Booker T. & The M.G.’s, and Carl Wells), “Personal Manager,” (by King and David Porter), and King’s own “Down Don’t Bother Me.”

The recording is taken from the documentary film and soundtrack Take Me to the River: New Orleans, which celebrates the rich musical history, the heritage, legacy, and influence of New Orleans and Louisiana music through live sessions with local artists. “Stompin’ Ground” was produced by the film’s director Martin Shore and Eric Krasno.

Pompano Beach Cultural Center will present the one-woman show On Purpose, created and performed by renowned poet Ebony Payne-English. Onstage, she paints a vivid picture of femininity at the peak of its strength and in the pit of its vulnerability in the face of an HIV diagnosis.

Today Petaluma Records released the soundtrack to Take Me To The River: New Orleans — the album and feature documentary film feature new recordings from The Neville Brothers, PJ Morton, Big Freedia, G-Eazy, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Snoop Dogg, Dumpstaphunk, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, William Bell, Ani DiFranco, Donald Harrison, Galactic, the late Dr. John, and many more. The film hits theaters in NYC and LA today and will roll out to select cities nationwide during the month of May, list of showings HERE. The soundtrack is available now digitally, with a CD and deluxe vinyl release to come on May 27, 2022. A Take Me To The River: All Stars tour is also set for this May, and select musicians featured in the project will perform at music venues across the country.

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of SMA, Stax Records owner Concord has announced the Concord Stax Scholarships, which will provide full tuition to at least 20 students in each year over the next five school years. Concord has pledged a minimum of $1 million through donations from its owners, team members, friends, and partners.

Today, Grammy nominated, internationally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Andrew Bird announces the spring 2020 “My Finest Work Yet” tour (including rescheduled dates) with support from Erika Wennerstrom from the Heartless Bastards. The two recently collaborated on a new version of Bird's “Manifest,” and this tour will provide them an opportunity to perform the track live for audiences across the United States. 1969 marked a year that was full of both trepidation and excitement for Stax Records. Just one year before, the Memphis soul outlet ended its relationship with musical giant Atlantic Records, effectively leaving the label as an independent entity, without a music catalog (which had previously included a formidable collection of hits by Otis Redding, Carla Thomas and Sam & Dave, among others). Under the guidance of co-owner Al Bell, the label proceeded to rebuild and release an impressive collection of 27 albums and 30 singles in just a handful of months—a period known as “Soul Explosion.” The gamble paid off, and at the 1969 Stax sales summit—themed “Getting It All Together”—the label reaffirmed its place as a soul powerhouse. Craft Recordings celebrates the 50th anniversary of this prolific, make-or-break moment for Stax—and its enduring legacy—with a wide selection of physical and digital reissues. Additionally, Craft will pay tribute to the label throughout the year with a series of playlists, original content, contests and more.
