This holiday season, cozy up with Blackfriars Theatre (795 East Main Street, Rochester) for the infectiously delightful new classic, Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley. Featuring all of your favorite Pride and Prejudice characters, the story picks up where the novel left off at the grand estate of newlyweds, Mr. and Mrs. Darcy.
In keeping with its tradition of spotlighting new plays and emerging playwrights, in addition to the stalwarts that theatre audiences know and love ('Little Shop of Horrors' is next on the docket), Rochester's JCC Centerstage Theatre launched its production of 'Tracy Jones' on March 5th, a National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere written by Stephen Kaplan. It's a play filled with laughs, tears, and high-octane anxiety that you don't want to miss.
As part of the Gala celebration, the evening will feature musical selections from the new musical Austen's Pride performed by Broadway's Mamie Parris (School of Rock) and Bobby Conte Thornton (Company), along with Olivia Hernandez, who was seen in the production at The 5th Avenue Theatre.

Most people are familiar with Jane Austen's a?oePride and Prejudicea??. Whether it's from the book, the mini-series, the movies (even the zombie one), or just from general pop culture, most people know the story. So, turning this into a musical is a bit risky especially with so many Austen-philes out there. But writers Lindsay Warren Baker and Amanda Jacobs, have pulled it off (to an extent) with their new musical a?oeAusten's Pridea??, currently at the 5th Avenue Theatre, and have even tripled the daunting task by making the melodies soar while fitting in the period, combining it with a story of Austen herself, and still retaining the charm and heart of a?oePride and Prejudicea?? along the way.

The corporate labeling of Disney's Newsies drips with irony. Newsies tells the David versus Goliath story of a strike initiated by the fictional Jack Kelly when newspaper carriers in 1899 took on media mogul Joseph Pulitzer, protesting a hike in the cost of paper delivery. The strike mushrooms into a questioning of unfair child labor practices instituted by corporate greed throughout New York City at the turn of the century. The notion of a children's crusade promoting the rights of the individual laborer against monopolized capitalism should make one question whether Disney is protesting against itself. But Disney often taps into this mythos of impoverished youthful idealism overcoming entrenched, systematized and cynical power, generically elevating the exuberant heroism without promoting the political ideals involved. The book and music for Disney's Newsies is no exception. It swells with emotion but is woefully short on ideas.
