One of the most buzzed about L.A. indietronic bands of the last several years, the extraordinary L.A. Drones!, has just released their new full-length album I Can't Stop To Dance This Shit! For the uninitiated, L.A. Drones! (Spanish for “thieves”) are a mysterious duo from parts unknown, Mr. Pablo & Darlingtonia, create some of the punkiest, catchiest and most psychedelic dance music this side of the 405. The band is a fixture on L.A.'s live circuit especially in the tight knit, almost cult-like devoted scenes surrounding Echo Park including numerous performances at the revered Part Time Punks showcase. Their raunchy, risqué and raucous performances have been featured alongside Psychic TV, PiL's Jah Wobble, Juan Atkins, Lydia Lunch, Thrill Kill Kult and more!
Run, don't walk, to see the brilliant CANDIDE at the Union Avenue Opera in St. Louis! This is the opening production of their twenty-fifth festival season, and it is, for my money, the most wonderful of the many lovely shows they've done.
Some people think everything happens in life for a reason. Others choose to relish all the great parts of life while others drown in the despair of the horrible things that happen in the world. Whatever your philosophy on life is, one thing you would never expect is to see that philosophy come to life on stage, and then be able to laugh at it. That's the beauty of Leonard Bernstein's Candide. It doesn't poke fun at our views, it asks us to take a deeper look at them. It's when we take a deeper look we can see the humor of it. That's what makes Candide the best of all possible shows to see at the present time. Des Moines Metro Opera (DMMO) opened their most recent production of Candide on June 29. The brightly colored sets and costumes as well as the extremely talented cast truly make this the best of all possible productions

Today, Tanbark, comprised of Chloe Nelson and James Jannicelli, released their new self-titled LP 'Heart-Shaped Locket.' The nine-track set came at a time when the band finally felt at home in their adopted hometown of Brooklyn, New York. 'We wanted to make an honest portrayal of our first few years in this massive city and grapple with the smallness of our constant search for an authentic voice and beauty underneath the hustle,' Nelson has said of the album. 'We smoothed the edges of our personal experiences and brought some warm country music tones, pedal steel and piano, to a project recorded in the middle of a harsh winter.' The album rolls between fantasy, innocence and desire, sweetened by the pair's lush harmonies and Nelson's rich, ethereal vocal style.
Over 21 artists will make their Union Avenue Opera (UAO) debut this summer as the company celebrates its 25th Anniversary Season. The seven-week summer season will open Friday, July 5 with Bernstein's hilarious, philosophical, and fast-paced take on Voltaire's 1759 biting satire of the same name, Candide and will feature the return of Christine Brewer to the UAO stage. The season continues through August 24th with performances of Puccini's operatic blockbuster La boheme, a tribute to UAO's tradition of presenting operas in original languages, and the St. Louis premiere of Tom Cipullo's Glory Denied, the true saga of Vietnam veteran Colonel Jim Thompson, the longest-held American POW in US history.
War! Earthquakes! Disease! Very bad things happen to very good people (and plenty of bad ones too). When young Candide's marriage proposal to a baron's daughter doesn't quite go as planned, this naive student of optimism is thrust into an eye-opening odyssey across lands near and far, discovering the horrors of existence at every turn.
Brooklyn-based duo Tanbark has shared 'Heart-Shaped Locket,' a new track from their forthcoming self-titled album, out May 31st. The song is the third from the record, and was inspired by, as most of the songs on Tanbark, talismans and good luck charms. ''Heart-Shaped Locket' was inspired by a locket that I got at an antique market in London,' says band member Chloe Nelson. 'I carefully drew tiny illustrations of people in it, and this personal touch unintentionally made the people indecipherable to anyone but myself. A locket is something you wear closed in plain sight, hiding the things or people that you most treasure. I wanted to evoke hastily purchased gift shop tchotchkes and a getaway car with dusty pink dice on the rear-view mirror, rolling out of town. Halfway through the song, the narrator gets a bit less reliable; she pleads and maybe longs for something she does not quite have.”
There is nothing negative I could possibly say about the performance I witnessed on April 4, 2019 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Such artistry is almost hard to describe. This company has an amazing history and is superb in both their interpretation and their amazing technique. Their 60-year history of excellence is a gift to our lives that must always Be. What more could you want?

Supple strength that fluidly morphs until it hits a line that is as outstretched and aesthetically perfect as could be, and those are the visual pictures they create with their bodies. It is a way of moving that combines all the elements of different opposites that we feel, react to and dream of, painting a visual picture, conveying expressive perceptions.
Love stories aren't always roses and chocolate and holding hands. Love can make us passionate and desperate, tender and angry, determined and forlorn. Sometimes all within the span of a few hours. Love can turn us into fools.
In the Spring of 2001 playwright Patrick Riviere finished the first draft of his play The House of Nunzio. It was not his first play, but his first in years. By the fall of 2003, the full-length play described as a 'humorous drama' had been named a semi-finalist in two national playwriting competitions, had been given a reading at Manhattan Theatre Club Studios and was selected for a developmental workshop at Manhattan Theatre Source. It seemed as if the play was destined for a world premiere and yet the playwright struggled to find anyone who wanted to produce it, despite the accolades and preliminary interest from some theaters.

Toronto trio Odonis Odonis revealed the latest single, 'Insect,' from their forthcoming EPReaction out April 12 via Felte (pre-order). The song which premiered today at Post-Punk will be available on all streaming services this Friday and can also be shared at YouTube. About the song Post-Punk says, 'The band have been performing 'Insect' over the course of the last year, honing in on the track's sleazy, groove-driven nature. As always, Odonis Odonis strike the perfect balance between moody psychedelia and heavy blasts of industrial noise, and 'Insect' channels both the avant-ghetto grooves of mid-era Cabaret Voltaire and the sheer terror of Liars' best material over the course of three intensely captivating minutes. 'Insect' has been a live favorite for some time now, with fans across the board clamoring for its release.'
