BWW Review: RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN'S CINDERELLA Is Wild Deviation from Expectation

The Muny's current production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella is definitely not Walt Disney's Cinderella. It is nothing like Perrault's or the Grimm Brothers' Cinderella. It's not even pure Rodgers & Hammerstein, but rather a 2013 adaptation based on Rodgers & Hammerstein with a new book by Douglas Carter Beane. This musical holds the essence of your beloved fairytale but is infused (I must warn you upfront) with complicating new characters, a clumsy reordering of the original songs, and a conspicuous political subplot. BWW Review: CHAMPION at Opéra De Montréal

Champion is based on a true story, focusing on the life of welterweight prizefighting champion Emile Griffith, a respected and famous boxer whose life rapidly changed after accidentally killing his opponent, Benny Paret, in the ring. Griffith was also bisexual in a time when it was socially unacceptable and was known for having said: “I kill a man and most people understand and forgive me. However, I love a man, and to so many people this is an unforgivable sin.”

THE 39TH L'OPERA DE MONTREAL SEASON at Place Des Arts 2018-2019

The Opéra de Montréal has an exciting 39th season planned for the 2018-2019 production year. The Place des Arts lineup includes classics like Rigoletto, Das Rheingold, Carmen and the anticipated Canadian premiere of the jazz-opera Champion. In addition to these four operas, a chamber opera called Twenty-Seven will be presented at the Centaur Theatre and a concert with soprano Joyce El-Khoury and Pianist Laurent Philippe will be held at the Festival du Monde Arabe.

In celebration of Chorus Master Walter Huff's 25 years with the company, The Atlanta Opera presents a concert of masterpieces spanning 300 years of operatic choral repertoire, including well-known selections by Verdi, Mozart, Puccini, Wagner, Bizet, Britten, and Glass, among others. Each performance features the powerfully moving voice of the acclaimed Atlanta Opera Chorus, conducted by Maestro Huff and accompanied by pianist Brian Eads.

Dallas Opera Announces Chris Alexander to Stage CARMEN Starring Clementine Margaine in Debut

The Dallas Opera is pleased to announce that “theatrically masterly” (Seattle Times) German/American stage director Chris Alexander, has agreed to stage our season-opening production of Georges Bizet's CARMEN, starring French mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine in her American debut. Born in Provo, Utah but a life-long resident of Germany, Alexander recently received critical acclaim for his staging of Seattle Opera's production of Beethoven's Fidelio (Mr. Alexander is a favorite of opera audiences in the Pacific Northwest), as well as Cincinnati Opera's presentation of Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss earlier this summer.

Cape Town Opera Announces PORGY & BESS Summer UK Tour Cast - Tsakane Maswanganyi & Xolela Sixaba Star

Cape Town Opera returns to the UK this June & July for a tour of their acclaimed Porgy and Bess, culminating in a two week run at the London Coliseum. Tsakane Maswanganyi, who previously thrilled audiences in the title role of Carmen Jones at the Royal Festival Hall will play Bess, while Xolela Sixaba will reprise the role of Porgy having won great acclaim for his performance in 2009.
