Cape Town Opera Performs PORGY AND BESS at Hippodrome Tonight, June 6
Cape Town Opera are set to bring their acclaimed production of The Gershwins' PORGY AND BESS to Birmingham Hippodrome for the first time, opening tonight, 6 June through Saturday 9 June. The dates mark the first performances of their forthcoming UK tour prior to a two week run in London.
Relocated to the depression-ravaged townships of 1970's Soweto, Cape Town Opera have made Gershwin's classic their own, as the search for hope and happiness, amidst poverty and hardship, unfolds in a poignant tale of love and deprivation.
PORGY AND BESS is known around the world as 'the peoples' opera'. Written in 1935 and originally portraying the 1920s life of America's Deep South, this work contains songs including "Summertime," "I got plenty of nuttin'," "It ain't necessarily so," and "I loves you Porgy."
