The new documentary, The Definition of Insanity, explores the groundbreaking work of The Miami-Dade Criminal Mental Health Project (CMHP), an approach being heralded as a model for helping to solve the mental health crisis in America. A people-powered community-wide safety net, CMHP works through the court system to steer people with mental illness a?" as their legal cases hang in the balance a?" on a path from incarceration to recovery. Shocked by how people with mental illness were treated in Miami-Dade's jails, Judge Steven Leifman works with a team of dedicated public servants, as well as former adversaries in the criminal justice system, to help people with mental illness navigate from lives of tragedy to possibility. Building on the story of Miami's once-failed mental health system a?" a familiar national narrative of over-incarceration and brutal mistreatment a?" The Definition of Insanity instead reveals a humane criminal justice approach to mental illness that is orchestrated from the court outwards into the community. Produced and directed by Gabriel London, written and produced by Charlie Sadoff, and narrated by Rob Reiner, The Definition of Insanity premieres on Tuesday, April 14, 2020, 10:00-11:00 p.m. ET (check local listings) on PBS, PBS.org and the PBS Video App.
Mae, a struggling young actress, loses both of her parents to cancer. Peggy- her kind, peacemaker mother- dies of cancer in 1995. Six years later, when Mae moves back home to care for her terminally ill father, she imagines moments of reconciliation and grace. But unlike Peggy, Al does not handle the treatment with any sort of grace and Mae struggles with her role as his caregiver. As her father's health declines, his obsession with the Sci-Fi Network and creating a machine to deliver him to another dimension intensifies. Mae summons memories of her mother for guidance, and with humor and compassion strives to reach her final goal...to give her father a good death.
How far would you go to help a suicidal loved one, especially if that person has already attempted suicide, but survived? If you had the legal right to make treatment choices on behalf of your suicidal loved one, would you consent to your suicidal loved one receiving an extreme form of treatment that your suicidal loved one is apprehensive to receive? Would you overlook the attempted suicide and treat the situation as a mere poor decision during a rough time? Could you emotionally handle the responsibility if your decision, either way, adversely impacts your suicidal loved one? I hope you never find yourself in that situation, but if you do, the show NEXT TO NORMAL, which is running at the Almira F. Stephan Memorial Playhouse, in Meriden, CT, as put on by the Castle Craig Players, challenges us to think of how we would react if confronted with this reality. I had the pleasure of seeing this show on Sunday, March 8, 2020. It is directed by Oliver Kochol and Ian Galligan.

The Fainting Room is an explosive release of physical comedy, music, and candid confession. This raucous one-woman show explores how the mental/physical diagnosis of hysteria (a disease which continued to be recognized until 1952) has shaped our understanding of mental and sexual health today, examining the intersections of gender, mental health, sexuality and body positivity while celebrating self love and agency over the care of our own bodies. It follows the journey of a modern young woman who finds herself transported back in time to an 1890's medical treatment facility. There she encounters two different doctors, a midwife and an anthropomorphized vibrator as she is exposed to absurd medical treatments and anatomical misunderstandings of the past. Running time is 60 minutes with no intermission.
